Oleksandr Gvozdyk vs Artur Beterbiev Preview

These are two of the top light heavyweight fighters in the world, and while they have similar backgrounds, they have different styles.

Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk is 17-0 with 14 knockouts in his professional career. He won the bronze medal representing Ukraine in the light heavyweight division at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and he turned pro in April 2014. Gvozdyk boxed throughout the western United States, winning his first nine fights to earn a title shot two years after his debut. He knocked out Nadjib Mohammedi in the second round to claim the NABF light heavyweight title and defended it three times before facing Yunieski Gonzalez for the WBO strap.

Gvozdyk proved he was too much for Gonzalez, winning by TKO in the third round to claim that belt, and he won the WBC light heavyweight belt with a victory over Mehdi Amar in March 2018. He knocked out Adonis Stevenson in his next fight to secure the title and beat Doudou Ngumbu by TKO in the fifth round in his last bout back in March.

The Ukrainian is trained by Teddy Atlas, and he is a very technical fighter. Gvozdyk has more mobility than most of his opponents in the ring, and he uses that to his advantage to set up his preferred left hand.

Artur Beterbiev is 14-0 with 14 knockouts, and a man with his power needs no nickname. Beterbiev has won all of his professional fights by knockout, and the Russian was a highly decorated amateur boxer before turning pro. He won gold at the 2006 and 2010 European Championships, and he claimed the gold medal at the 2009 World Championships too.

Beterbiev is two years older than his opponent, but he has fought even less due to a contract dispute with his former promoter. He knocked out his first five opponents inside of four rounds to win his first strap, and Beterbiev has continued to overwhelm his opponents with his power. The Russian has won 13 of his 14 fights within seven rounds, and the only boxer that nearly went the distance with Beterbiev was Enrico Kolling two years ago.

You won’t find a boxer with more power than Beterbiev at the light heavyweight division, and he will want to turn this into a brawl. If he can close the distance on Gvozdyk, he is capable of delivering lots of punishment.
