Nordine Oubaali vs. Nonito Donaire Boxing Odds

After a few starts and stops, we will finally see Nordine Oubaali take on Nonito Donaire for the WBC bantamweight title over Memorial Day Weekend. This fight was postponed twice as each fighter came down with COVID, and neither Oubaali nor Donaire has entered the ring since November 7. Oddly enough, they took on the Inoue brothers in Saitama, Japan with Oubaali defeating Takuma Inoue and Donaire suffering a unanimous decision loss to Naoya Inoue. The winner of Oubaali vs. Donaire will likely take on the latter Inoue in a unification fight.

The legendary Nonito Donaire is one of a handful of boxers that has won titles in four different divisions over the course of his long career. Donaire has been boxing for over two decades now, and one of the best fighters in the world during the late 2000s and early 2010s is still competing at a high level.

Donaire didn’t lose a fight for over 12 years between 2001 and 2013. His first major title came when he defeated Vic Darchinyan by fifth round TKO for the IBF and IBO flyweight titles in July 2007. He successfully defended those two belts three times before moving up a weight class and scored a unanimous decision over Rafael Concepcion in August 2009 to win the WBA super flyweight title. We saw him defend that strap twice before he moved up once again.

He made quick work of Fernando Montiel with a 2nd round knockout to claim the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles in February 2011. Donaire defended those belts against Omar Narvaez and then won a championship title in his fourth division with a split decision victory over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for the WBO super bantamweight belt. He added IBF and The Ring super bantamweight belts before losing a unification bout with Guillermo Rigondeaux in April 2013, snapping a 30-fight winning streak for Donaire.

It’s been a somewhat bumpy road for Donaire since that loss. He won the WBA super featherweight belt in May 2014, but he lost the title in his first defense. Donaire claimed the WBO super bantamweight title in December 2015, yet he could only successfully defend that strap once before giving it up too. He now has relatively recent losses to Jessie Magdaleno, Carl Frampton, and Naoya Inoue on his resume, but all three boxers are elite.

Few boxers at this level have had a more interesting journey than Nordine Oubaali. He won a bronze medal in the light flyweight division at the 2007 World Championships as an amateur, and then he competed in both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics rather than turn pro. Unfortunately, that decision didn’t pan out as he failed to advance past the quarterfinals in either Olympics, so he turned pro at the age of 27 in 2014.

Oubaali didn’t have any trouble with his first 10 opponents, setting up a WBA Inter-Continental title fight with Julio Cesar Miranda. He won that bout by 12th round TKO, and then he beat Alejandro Hernandez by 10th round TKO for the WBC Silver bantamweight belt six months later. His 7th round KO of Mark Anthony Geraldo in his title defense at the end of the year opened the door for a shot at the WBC bantamweight title.

His unanimous decision win over Rau’shee Warren gave Oubaali his first title at the age of 32. Oubaali proceeded to defend the belt against Arthur Villanueva and Takuma Inoue before being shelved for the last 18 months.

Nordine Oubaali vs. Nonito Donaire

Donaire is the play here. The veteran has a lot more experience and is a lot more seasoned than the champion. All three of his recent losses are to fighters that are more talented than Oubaali, and this is a nice price on the underdog.
