Mikey Garcia vs. Jessie Vargas Betting

One of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world will step into the ring for the first time in 2020 and look to wipe away the memory of his most recent bout. Mikey Garcia (39-1 with 30 knockouts) fell to Errol Spence Jr. in Arlington, Texas last March, but he is a heavy favorite per the boxing betting odds against Jessie Vargas (29-2-2 with 11 knockouts). A victory for Garcia would likely lead to another welterweight title shot the next time he enters the ring, while a win for Vargas should set him up to fight for a major belt for the first time in almost four years.

Mikey Garcia -750

Jessie Vargas +479

Both boxers are in their 30s, but Garcia has had a more prestigious career. He has won titles at three different weight classes, and he didn’t suffer his first setback until he fought Spence for the IBF welterweight title last year. Vargas is just 3-2-2 in his last seven bouts, and that has many questioning whether he can handle the rigors of fighting the most elite fighters in the welterweight division.

Mikey Garcia vs. Jessie Vargas Preview

Garcia turned pro at the age of 18 in 2006. He won 18 of his first 21 fights by knockout, and the last of those fights was an impressive first round TKO victory over Tomas Villa. That victory over Villa earned him the IBF-USBA featherweight strap, and he was fighting for even bigger titles the following year.

He met Matt Remillard for two minor belts in March 2011, and he dispatched of his foe in 10 rounds. Garcia followed that up with knockouts inside of eight rounds against his next five opponents to earn his first major title shot against Orlando Salido. He won the fight by technical decision after an accidental headbutt broke Garcia’s nose, claiming the WBO featherweight title in the process.

That victory spurred Garcia to move up to other weight classes. He won the WBO junior lightweight title against Roman Martinez in November 2013, and he defended the title successfully less than three months later. From there, he moved up to the lightweight division and knocked out Dejan Zlaticanin for the WBC strap inside of three rounds.

Garcia defeated Adrien Broner by unanimous decision in July 2017, and his last three bouts have all been with titles on the line. He won a unanimous decision over Sergey Lipinets for the IBF junior welterweight title in March 2018, and he followed that up with a unanimous decision win over Robert Easter Jr. in July 2018 for the WBC and IBF lightweight titles. Garcia couldn’t knock off Spence for the IBF welterweight belt though, losing every single round on all three judges’ scorecards.

Jessie Vargas doesn’t have the same power that Garcia possesses, but he is a solid technical fighter. Vargas won his first 21 bouts before getting a title shot, and he won the WBC Continental Americas welterweight title over Wale Omotoso in March 2013.

He claimed the WBA and IBO super lightweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Khabib Allakhverdiev, and those were followed by similar victories over Anton Novikov and Antonio DeMarco. Vargas suffered his first loss in June 2015 with a decision loss to Timothy Bradley, but he followed that up with a knockout of Sadam Ali for the WBO welterweight belt. Unfortunately, he lost to Manny Pacquiao in his next fight, and he fought Thomas Dulorme and Adrien Broner to draws in the last two years.
