Hughes has had a recent rough stretch of two wins and two losses in his last four fights. Last time out was on February 22, 2020 when he faced Kris Pilkington in at the Doncaster Dome in Doncaster. Hughes prevailed in a four round PTS.

On November 9, 2019 Hughes faced Liam Walsh at York Hall in Bethnal Green. At stake was the World Boxing Organization European lightweight title. Hughes lost in a 10-round unanimous decision.

Since his aforementioned loss to Tevin Farmer, Jono Carroll has won his last two bouts. Carroll last stepped into the ring on March 7, 2020 against Scott Quigg at Manchester Arena in Manchester. Carroll scored an 11th round technical knockout as Quigg’s corner threw in the towel.
