Why: Junior Middleweight Fight

Jermell Charlo vs. Jorge Cota

Certainly, everyone is disappointed that Harrison can’t answer the bell for a much-anticipated rematch. Cota is in a tough position here as the late replacement with no real track record of success at this level. Charlo should make a statement in this one as he bides time for Harrison.

Junior Middleweight Fight

Jorge Cota is 31 years old and a native of Mexico where he still resides. Cota stands at five feet, 11 inches tall with a reach of 73.5 inches and fights from an orthodox stance. Cota is currently ranked 59th in the world.

In his last bout on April 20, 2019 Cota was defeated in a 10-round split decision against Jeison Rosario. The fight took place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Cota was a late replacement for this fight as Tony Harrison was the original entry but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Cota is a veteran journeyman that has never fought for a world title in his career.

Jermell Charlo is 29 years old and ranked ninth in the world. He is a native of Texas and now resides there in the city of Houston. Charlo stands at five feet, 11 inches tall with a reach of 73 inches and fights from an orthodox stance.

Charlo is also coming off a loss in his last fight. On December 22, 2018 he faced Tony Harrison at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for the World Boxing Council world super welterweight title. Harrison scored a 10-round unanimous decision win.

Charlo held the World Boxing Council light middleweight title from 2016 to 2018. Jermell is the younger brother by one minute to his twin brother Jermall who is also a professional boxer and a former world champion in 2017.

Prior to his loss to Harrison, Charlo faced Austin Trot on June 9, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angles. The fight was for the World Boxing Council world super welterweight championship. Trout was down in the third round and ninth rounds and that paved the way for Charlo to win a 12 round majority decision.

Charlo originally won the World Boxing Council light middleweight title on May 21, 2016 when he defeated John Jackson by a technical knockout. The fight took place at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. He had successfully defended his title belt three straight times before the loss to Harrison.
