Gennady Golovkin has had nearly nine months to stew over his majority decision loss to Canelo Alvarez for the world unification world middleweight title. The first loss of Golovkin’s career took place on September 15, 2018 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. While there was a lot of debate about who actually won the bout Golovkin was basically gracious about it.
“I’m not going to say who won tonight, because of the victory belongs to Canelo, according to the judges,” remarked Golovkin after the defeat. “I thoguht that it was a very good fight for the fans and very exciting. I thought I fought better than he did.”
Golovkin’s trainer at that time, Abel Sanchez, said that, “We had a great fight, the one we expected the first time around. I had it close to going into the 12th round. We had good judges, who saw it from different angles. I can’t complain about the decision, but its close enough to warrant a third fight.”
Both Golovkin and Canelo claimed to be open to the possibility of a third fight some time down the line.
After the fight and a lot of soul searching Golovkin and Sanchez parted ways in bitter fashion. The split was announced on April 24, 2019. Sanchez stated that Golovkin was “Greedy and ungrateful. I was blindsided, really.” Apparently Golovkin offered Sanchez a pay cut to continue, which his long-time trainer refused. Sanchez said that Golovkin’s new deal with DAZN changed him. “I feel for the morals and scruples of somebody like that,” said Sanchez. “It’s all over money.”
For his part Golovkin praised Sanchez as a great and hall of fame trainer. And then moved on.
Jonathon Banks has taken over as Golovkin’s trainer. The big challenge for Golovkin and Banks is the attempt to change styles. Banks wants a much speedier approach than what Golovkin has used throughout his career. Golovkin did not show improvement or progress in his last two fights, which helped prompt the change.
Despite the loss to Canelo, Golovkin is ranked second in the world. In Steve Rolls the former champion will be facing a Canadian journeyman that is ranked 77th in the world. Rolls is best known for being a former member of the Canadian national boxing team.
