Errol Spence Jr. vs. Shawn Porter Preview

Spence is considered one of the best boxers in the sport. The 29-year-old has yet to lose a match and with 21 of his 25 wins coming by knockout, only a handful of opponents have made it the full length of the fight.

He knocked out Kell Brook to win the IBF title in May 2017, stopping the reigning champion in 11 rounds. Spence followed that win by pummeling his next opponent in his first title defense, forcing Lamont Peterson’s corner to throw in the towel in the seventh round. He was even more impressive against Carlos Ocampo in June 2018, knocking Ocampo out midway through the first round.

In his last fight, Spence received his toughest challenge to date. He was unable to knock out challenger Mikey Garcia, winning by unanimous decision after 12 rounds. However, Spence completely dominated the fight, winning all 12 rounds on all three judges’ scorecards. Spence outpunched Garcia 345 to 75 on the evening.

Shawn Porter has been one of the top welterweights in the world throughout the decade. He has fought for the IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO titles, becoming one of a handful of fighters to do that in recent history.

Porter claimed the WBO-NABO welterweight title in July 2012, and he won the IBF welterweight title from Devon Alexander in December 2013. He stopped Paulie Malignaggi in his first fight with both belts four months later, but he suffered the first defeat of his career in August 2014. Porter lost by majority decision to Kell Brook.

He won his next two fights to earn another shot at the title, taking on WBA title holder Keith Thurman in New York City in June 2016. Porter lost by unanimous decision in 12 rounds, and he took an extended break after the fight. He returned to claim the vacant WBC middleweight title by defeating Danny Garcia in the ring in September 2018, and he made his first title defense in March. The defending champion beat Yordenis Ugas by split decision.
