Spence has successfully defended his International Boxing Federation title twice after defeating Kell Brook to win the belt on May 27, 2017. Spence scored an 11th round knockout win over Brook in a scheduled 12 round bout. He then scored an RTD win in the seventh round of a scheduled 12 round bout against Lamont Peterson on January 20, 2018 followed by a first round knockout win over Carlos Ocampo on June 16, 2018.

Garcia is coming off a unanimous decision win over Robert Easter Jr in a 12 round bout that was in defense of his World Boxing Council lightweight title. Garcia also added the International Boxing Federation lightweight title belt to his collection with the win last June.
