Daniel Jacobs vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Preview

This is Daniel Jacobs first fight as a Super Middleweight. The Golden Child began his professional career in December 2007. He quickly rose up the ranks in the Middleweight division by beating his first 15 opponents by knockout, earning his first major title shot on July 31, 2010.

Jacobs suffered his first defeat as a boxer then, losing by knockout in the fifth round to WBO Middleweight title holder Dmitry Pirog. That set his rise back, but Jacobs responded by winning his next two fights by knockout before being forced to step away from the ring for 19 months after being diagnosed with cancer.

After beating cancer, Jacobs returned to the ring and won 10 straight matches by knockout. He beat Jarrod Fischer for the WBA Middleweight strap in August 2014, and Jacobs retained the title four times before facing GGG for the unified Middleweight title in March 2017. Jacobs lost that bout by unanimous decision.

He won the IBF Middleweight title over Sergiy Derevyanchenko in October 2018, but he lost the belt to Canelo Alvarez in a unification fight back in May. Jacobs lost that fight by unanimous decision, and he made the move to the less competitive Super Middleweight division after the loss.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has lived up to his father’s name. His father was a six-time world champion over a long career, so expectations were high for Chavez Jr. from the start.

He began his career all the way back in 2003. Chavez Jr. won 23 straight bouts before suffering a setback with a draw to Carlos Molina. He won a majority decision over the future champion in a rematch to continue his ascent, taking his record to 42-0-1 before receiving his first major title shot.

Chavez Jr. took advantage of the opportunity and bested Sebastian Zbik for the WBC Middleweight title in June 2011. He retained the title three times before losing to Sergio Martinez in September 2012, and he has fought rather sparingly since that loss. Chavez Jr. won his next two fights before losing to Andrzej Fonfara in April 2015, and he won two more fights before losing a highly anticipated fight with Canelo Alvarez in May 2017.

The younger Chavez didn’t box again for 27 months before knocking out Evert Bravo in the first round back in August.
