Quip Preakness Stakes BettingTriple Crown Betting Online: Though he had enough qualifying points to enter the Kentucky Derby, trainer Rodolphe Brisset elected to hold Quip out of the Run for the Roses to focus on the Preakness Stakes. There was some concern over his entry at Pimlico after Justify, who is also co-owned by WinStar Farm, won the Derby. And would the owners want their horse competing against their Triple Crown hopeful? With some trepidation they relented, and Quip will run after placing second in the Arkansas Derby.

The Preakness Stakes will be run on Saturday, May 19, 2018 with post time set for 6:20 p.m. ET at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Catch the Preakness Stakes live on NBC.

Quip

Career Record: 3-1-0

Career Earnings: $482,800

Quip started his racing career with a bang winning his first two races rather easily before coming back down to earth with a seventh-place finish at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last November. After a three-and-a-half month layoff, Quip returned to the track for his first race as a three-year-old to claim the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby. In his last race, Quip narrowly lost to undefeated Magnum Moon at the Arkansas Derby and earned his shot at the Preakness after placing.

Why Quip Will Win the Preakness Stakes

He’s used to winning after taking three races in his five career starts. Quip is also rested after skipping the Kentucky Derby, even though he had enough points to qualify for the race. Trainer Brisset chose not to enter Quip in the Derby feeling his horse would be better off running fresh and at a shorter distance.

Quip won the Tampa Bay Derby after a lengthy freshening, besting a field that included Kentucky Derby racers Vino Rosso and Flameaway. In his last race Quip placed at the Arkansas Derby, making a late charge at undefeated Magnum Moon before faltering.

Why Quip Won't Win the Preakness Stakes

Though he’s won three of his first five starts, Quip isn’t a finisher and he’s still raw. At the Arkansas Derby, he challenged undefeated Magnum Moon right up to the quarter pole before the eventual champ pulled away, leaving Quip to take a photo finish for second, about four lengths off the pace. Quip is good out of the gate, but the 1 3/16 mile Pimlico course is likely to present a problem down the home stretch.

The Final Verdict

Quip will help set the pace out of the gate and he will likely be near the front at the half-mile mark. Being rested could help with a final push, but I don’t see the colt having the closing speed of Justify or Good Magic, and that’s why the odds are high for him. There was some concern over entering Quip in the Preakness, as he is co-owned by WinStar Farm, which also has a stake in Justify. However, ownership and trainer Brisset felt he deserved the chance to run after taking the Tampa Bay Derby and placing at the Arkansas Derby.
