Laoban Preakness Stakes BettingTriple Crown Betting Online: It’s been an up-and-down ride for Lone Sailor in his career. He came out on the list of possible entrants for the Preakness Stakes after an eighth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, but there’s still a chance he doesn’t run. Nevertheless, the opportunity is there and Lone Sailor has something to prove. He was on the track four days after the Derby and galloped a mile and a half showing “good energy, according to trainer Tom Amoss. The Derby was the ninth career race for the bay colt with just one victory in those starts.

The Preakness Stakes will be run on Saturday, May 19, 2018 with post time set for 6:20 p.m. ET at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Catch the Preakness Stakes live on NBC.

With his entry in the Preakness not confirmed at this time, there are no odds for Lone Sailor. If and when he is confirmed, look for the opening line to be in the range of the other middle of the pack horses, likely around 20-1. Amoss felt Lone Sailor’s Derby run was “a good one” that got interrupted by traffic. He gained ground down the stretch before faltering and the ride from jockey James Graham was questionable. If he runs the Preakness expect another rider, though none has been named yet. And the shorter track will also benefit Lone Sailor.

Why Lone Sailor Will Win the Preakness Stakes

Why not? Amoss felt Lone Sailor’s Derby race was a good one, despite a slow start out of the gate. That forced him into the pack at the outset and he got caught up in the traffic, slowing him down and putting him in catch-up mode almost immediately. He did break free at the halfway point, but again was locked at the rail with nowhere to go.

Once again though, he broke free and made up some ground down the stretch, getting into the fourth position before faltering, and the stress of trying to overtake several horses proved to be too much. Graham’s ride was questioned and we will see a different jockey if Lone Sailor runs in the Preakness. A better start and the shorter distance at Pimlico will certainly play to his advantage.

Why Lone Sailor Won't Win the Preakness Stakes

While he made up some ground in the middle of the Derby, the start was his downfall. And unfortunately that’s been a problem throughout his career. “He didn’t break well – he never does,” Amoss said after the Derby. A smaller field may help in that regard, but it’s something that has affected his races all season. And Lone Sailor isn’t a winner. He has just one victory in nine career starts. With a better start and on a shorter track than the Derby, Lone Sailor is a contender to show, but he’s likely not good enough to win.

The Final Verdict

On Wednesday after the Derby, Lone Sailor trotted a mile-and-a-half at Churchill Downs with Amoss saying he showed “good energy.” His entry in the Preakness was contingent on how he trained, among other things, and it looks like Lone Sailor will be part of the small field at Pimlico. That improves his chances of finishing in the money, however, third is probably the best he can do behind Justify and Good Magic.
