Classic Empire Preakness Stakes BettingTriple Crown Betting Online: As is the case with a number of horses that don’t win the Kentucky Derby, there’s a chance Good Magic doesn’t make the trip to Pimlico for the Preakness. If he does, though, Good Magic is coming off as the second favorite to Justify at +450. And given how the colt performed at Churchill Downs, he’s the likely competition to end Justify’s Triple Crown aspirations. Good Magic made a move late in the Derby to pressure the winner and held off Audible to claim runner-up honors in his third race of the year.

The Preakness Stakes will be run on Saturday, May 19, 2018 with post time set for 6:20 p.m. ET at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Catch the Preakness Stakes live on NBC.

Career Record: 2-3-1

Career Earnings: $2,255,000

Preakness Stakes Odds at BookMaker.eu: +450

Good Magic challenged undefeated Justify down the stretch, but he never grabbed the lead and took second-place, two-and-a-half lengths behind the winner. Trainer Chad Brown said after the race that he will reassess Good Magic’s Preakness entry, but that “the horse is sound. He looks good.” Brown won the Preakness last year with Cloud Computing and Good Magic has strong blood lines. His sire, Curlin, won the Preakness in 2007 after finishing third at the Kentucky Derby.

Why Good Magic Will Win the Preakness Stakes

Some horses are better in the mud than others and that may have been the case at the Kentucky Derby. Good Magic appeared to be in a good position to win the Derby, keeping pace with the winner around the final turn. But he couldn’t overtake Justify, finishing a few lengths off the lead in what was a great race for the colt.

Brown initially said he didn’t want to challenge Justify again, but he retracted those comments on Sunday, saying Good Magic looked good and he would reassess his condition over the following days to determine his next race. And with the Belmont Stakes not likely to happen, this could be Good Magic’s final race for some time. And it would be nice to give him another crack at Justify on a dry track.

Why Good Magic Won't Win the Preakness Stakes

There are some concerns about his durability and Good Magic isn’t built as strongly as Justify, so those are some marks against his chances of upsetting the Kentucky Derby champ. He was pressing around the final turn at the Derby, but didn’t have enough in the tank to overtake Justify. It was a brilliant race for Good Magic, yet he still came up short and that’s likely as good as he’ll be when running against the Kentucky Derby winner.

The Final Verdict

rown has to think his horse has a chance or he wouldn’t consider entering him in the Preakness. And the trainer doesn’t like Good Magic’s chances at the longer Belmont Stakes, so this is one last crack to upset Justify. Jockey Jose Ortiz kept Good Magic close but he had to go around Bolt d’Oro, which hurt his ride and forced a photo for second instead of first. Good Magic will be a strong competitor in the race, but I don’t think he has the acceleration on the shorter track at Pimlico
