Kentucky Derby Betting: Bolt d’Oro burst onto the scene as a two-year-old last August. He won his first three races, with the victories at the Del Mar Futurity and the FrontRunner Stakes being awfully impressive. Bolt d’Oro romped over Solomini by 7 ¾ lengths at the latter race, setting himself up as the favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
He was a heavy favorite to win at Del Mar, but he had a rough start and could not recover. Bolt d’Oro finished third behind both Good Magic and Solomini, and he has not crossed the finish line first since then.
Although he won at the San Felipe Stakes, the horse only won the race after a controversial disqualification. McKinzie beat him by a nose, but the judges took the victory away from him and awarded Bolt d’Oro the victory instead. After that, he was soundly beaten at the Santa Anita Derby by Justify, finishing three lengths behind.

The sire of Bolt d’Oro is Medaglia d’Oro and his dam is Globe Trot by way of AP Indy. Those are pretty impeccable credentials. AP Indy is considered one of the top sires and is a Hall of Fame horse, while Medaglia d’Oro most notably sired Rachel Alexandra. Bolt d’Oro is hoping he doesn’t have his father’s bad luck though, as Medaglia d’Oro was famous for finishing in second place.
Bolt d’Oro is owned and trained by Mick Ruis. Ruis has never been to the Kentucky Derby before, and this is his first real contender since getting back into horse racing after walking away from the sport a decade ago.
Victor Espinoza will be riding Bolt d’Oro at the Kentucky Derby. Espinoza recently rode California Chrome and American Pharaoh into the Winner’s Circle, but this will be his first time on the horse. He was previously jockeyed by Corey Nakatani and Javier Castellano.
Why Bolt d’Oro Will Win the Kentucky Derby
Bolt d’Oro has put up some pretty impressive speed numbers. He put a blazing fast time at the Santa Anita Derby, but he had the misfortune of facing Justify on his best day.
He is a stalker that likes to hang near the lead pack, and that should serve him well in a race with so many contenders that prefer to stay at the front too.
Why Bolt d’Oro Won't Win the Kentucky Derby
It’s now been three races since Bolt d’Oro crossed the finish line in first place. Although you can argue that he ran well in two of those three races, maybe the horse just doesn’t have it in him to close.
Also, Bolt d’Oro is experienced, but he has yet to run outside of California. All six of his races have been at either Santa Anita or Del Mar and he may have a tough time at Churchill Downs.
The Final Verdict
At this short of a price, I’ll pass on Bolt d’Oro. He is worth putting in some of your exotics, but I don’t see the horse winning.
