2017-Horse-Hence-Betting-Online-OddsKentucky Derby Betting: It took Vino Rosso until his last race to get the points he needed to qualify for the Kentucky Derby.

His career started off just fine. He won his maiden race by a comfortable margin and followed that up with another impressive win against an overmatched field the next month.

Things took a turn from there. Vino Rosso finished third to Flameaway and Catholic Boy at the Sam F. Davis Stakes, and then missed the board at the Lambholm Stakes despite being one of the favorites heading into the race.

That left the horse with just seven points heading into the Wood Memorial. The owners knew that Vino Rosso needed to win the race in order to feel good about his chances of making the field at the Kentucky Derby, and he did just that. He was able to outbattle Enticed to win the race by three lengths, giving him the big win he needed.

The Kentucky Derby will go to post on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 6:34 p.m. ET at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Catch the Kentucky Derby live on NBC.

Vino Rosso is one of a number of horses that will be racing against a half-brother in this field. Both he and Good Magic were sired by the legendary Curlin. Curlin finished his career as one of the top racing horses ever and has sired a number of talented progeny. Vino Rosso’s dam was Mythical Bride.

Todd Pletcher is Vino Rosso’s trainer. Pletcher has three other horses in this race and will surpass D. Wayne Lukas as the trainer with the most starters in Kentucky Derby history barring disaster. Even though he has taken a number of horses to the Derby, he has won just twice.

John Velazquez will be riding Vino Rosso on Saturday. This will be the 20th time that Velazquez has raced in the Derby, and he is looking for his third win. Velazquez won with Animal Kingdom in 2011 and rode Always Dreaming to victory last year.

Why Vino Rosso Will Win the Kentucky Derby

Beating a field that included Enticed, Restoring Hope, and Firenze Fire was impressive. Vino Rosso came on strong to win that race and he was able to outlast Enticed, the heavy favorite coming into the race. He posted his best speed rating yet at Aqueduct and is trending upwards.

Why Vino Rosso Won't Win the Kentucky Derby

The horse might not be fast enough to win. He posted middling speed rating in three of his five races and could have been disqualified for bumping Enticed three times on the backstretch.

The Final Verdict

I’m not going to take Vino Rosso at this price. The horse has typically been one of the favorites, but he has failed to deliver more often than not. He would have to be upwards of 15-1 before I considered him.
