Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

As the Breeders’ Cup continues to grow, there's more and more room for specialized races. In the case of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf race, two-year old turfers can get their first taste of the big time in what is the first Grade 1 race of their careers.

The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is scheduled as the fourth race of the Breeders' Cup. The race will take place as a part of the first day of racing at Santa Anita Park on Friday, November 1 and can be seen live on NBC Sports Network. Post-time is scheduled for 6:12 p.m. ET.

2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Field and Notes

The field for the 2019 race is a good one and there will likely be at least five horses that go off at single-digit odds. Wicked Whisper for trainer Steve Asmussen could go off as the favorite. The horse has won both of her previous starts and Asmussen won this race in 2011 with My Miss Aurelia.

Trainer Bob Baffert sends out Bast who looked good in winning the Del Mar Debutante and the Chandelier Stakes. Baffert has won this race twice with Silverbulletday in 1998 and Indian Blessing in 2007.

Trainer Mark Casse sends Perfect Alibi who has race five times with three wins and two second place finishes. She is a closer so the race needs to set up well for her to win.

Darkhorse contenders include British Idiom for trainer Brad Cox, Comical for trainer Doug O’Neill, and Lazy Daisy for O’Neill.

Longshots include Donna Veloce, KP Dreamin and Two Sixty.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Qualifying

Because the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf was started in 2007, it has always had "Win and You're In" races to qualify for the race. That's not to say that all five winners of these races ultimately end up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, but you can pretty much guarantee that all five winners of the races below are headed to the Breeders' Cup in some way, shape or form. What's interesting about the five qualifying races for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is that four of the five are run outside of the United States. Only the Bourbon Stakes is an automatic qualifying race for this portion of the Breeders' Cup, so not surprising, many of the two-year olds who run end up being international ponies.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf "Win and You're In" Races

RACE LOCATION WHEN RUN
Juvenile Turf Stakes Leopardstown Racecourse September
Summer Stakes Woodbine Racetrack September
Royal Lodge Stakes Rowley Mile September
Bourbon Stakes Keeneland Race Course October
Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere Longchamp Racecourse October

The real trick with the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is going to be handicapping the horses coming from overseas. Generally speaking, around half of this field is made up of colts who began their careers in Europe and are coming to the United States in search of a big payday.

The big names to watch at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf are actually those of the jockeys. These two-year old colts are fickle and are often hard to handicap since most have run just two or three races in their careers, so betting on jockeys matters for sure. Ryan Moore has won this race four times in the last eight years, and all four times, he was paired with trainer Aidan O'Brien. Frankie Dettori is another jockey to watch for sure, as he's won this race three times, most recently in 2014 aboard Hootenanny.

O'Brien and John Gosden are the two trainers to really watch out for as well. O'Brien has trained the winning two-year old turfer of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf four times in the past, while Gosden is the only other multiple time winner of this event having done so in 2008 and 2009.

Don't just fall into the trap of betting on the big-name trainers in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Todd Pletcher does have a win with Pluck in 2010, but for the most part, training turfers is significantly different than training dirt horses, and the results often show in races like this.
