2025 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Betting
An event that has become synonymous with the Fourth of July Holiday, the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest will have a familiar mouth back on the men’s side when the 2025 edition gets underway on Independence Day. The competition didn’t quite feel the same last year without 16-time champion Joey Chestnut, who was absent due to a contract dispute. However, the king of dogs is scheduled to return and is positioned as the overwhelming favorite. The defending men’s champion Patrick Bertoletti consumed 58 dogs last year, the fewest in the last 14 years. The winner in 10 of the last 11 contests and three in a row, Miki Sudo is the prohibitive favorite on the women’s side. Sudo’s streak of wins was interrupted in 2021 when she was pregnant and skipped the competition. The hot dog eating contest has become increasingly popular over the years and not wasting a golden opportunity, sportsbooks got involved, and the contest has been broadcast on ESPN since 2003.

Chestnut announced his return to the competition weeks before on social media. Still, oddsmakers have produced a second set of betting odds in case the GOAT doesn’t appear. In his eight wins between 2016 and 2023, Chestnut devoured more than 60 hot dogs every time. In the first six years of that run he ate at least 70, including a contest record 76 in 2021. With the king of competitive eating sidelined last year, Bertoletti waltzed through the open door to claim the title, though he consumed just 58 dogs, the first time since 2010 the men’s winner ate fewer than 60 hot dogs. If for some reason Chestnut doesn’t compete for the title, “Deep Dish” Bertoletti is positioned as the favorite, though the competition is seen as wide open. Bertoletti said he wouldn’t bet on himself to beat Chestnut this year, so you probably shouldn’t.

The women’s side has been more one-sided than the men’s with Miki Sudo owning the competition since 2014. She’s won every competition she entered and set a record last year with 51 dogs consumed. The only eater to win other than Sudo over the last decade was Michelle Lesco in 2021, when Sudo skipped the competition. With outrageous odds to win there’s not value backing Sudo.

Joey Chestnut represents the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest more than any other competitive eater at this point in his professional career. Since dethroning Kobayashi in 2007, he has won a record 16 competitions, and he has continually shattered the record for most hot dogs eaten in the span of 10 minutes. Chestnut scarfed down at least 70 hot dogs in six straight years from 2016 to 2021 and has consumed more than 60 in 14 of his titles. Prior to Chestnut’s streak no one had eaten more than 54 dogs.
Kobayashi has not competed in this competition since 2009 due to a long-running dispute with the organizers of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, but he still holds more than a dozen competitive eating records.

Until 2011, women and men competed on the same stage in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, and two women won this competition while the field was still unified. Melody Andorfer consumed 12 hot dogs in five minutes to win the competition on Labor Day in 1972, and Birgit Felden ate 9.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes to win the title in 1984.
Sonya Thomas was the first great female professional eater, besting male rivals across the country during the 2000s and early 2010s. She won the first three Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contests after the competitors were divided by gender. Miki Sudo has established herself as the GOAT when it comes to female professional eaters though. Sudo has won 10 of the last 11 contests, including three in a row, and last year she became the first female to consume 50 hot dogs.
