The Kentucky Derby is just over two weeks away and Justify is the current favorite at odds of just over 3-1. Justify is unbeaten and coming off a win in the Santa Anita Derby for trainer Bob Baffert. The second place finisher in that race, Bolt d’Oro is the second choice in the betting at odds of just under 6-1. Four other horses are listed at single-digit odds. 2018 Kentucky Derby
There are a number of real challengers to win this year’s “Run for the Roses” on May 5. Justify is the favorite, but he is not the only horse with a good chance to win this race. Justify is unbeaten and coming off a win in the Santa Anita Derby but the horse didn’t run as a 2-year old and no horse has won the Derby without running at two in more than a century. The second place finisher in the Santa Anita Derby, Bolt d’Oro is currently the second choice in Kentucky Derby betting but he probably will go off at double-digit odds on race day.
Good Magic won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year as a 2-year old and he looked good in winning the Blue Grass Stakes. No winner of the Blue Grass has won the Derby since Strike the Gold in 1991.
Vino Rosso for trainer Todd Pletcher is coming off a win in the Wood Memorial. Pletcher also has Audible who won the Florida Derby and he has Noble Indy who won the Louisiana Derby. Perhaps the best of the Pletcher runners is Magnum Moon who won the Arkansas Derby.
Don’t forget about Enticed who finished second in the Wood. Enticed won the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs last year. You also have to take a strong look at Mendelssohn who won the UAE Derby by more than 18 lengths for trainer Aidan O’Brien. Baffert said that Mendelssohn has a big chance to win the Derby.
Other horses of note are Quip who was second in the Arkansas Derby, Flameaway who was second in the Blue Grass and My Boy Jack who won the Lexington Stakes.
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia said that he is going to make Justify the morning line Kentucky Derby favorite. He said that he expects to make either Magnum Moon or Mendelssohn the second choice in the betting, followed by Audible, Good Magic, Bolt d’Oro and Vino Rosso. “This is a really, really tough bunch of 3-year-olds,” Battaglia said to the media recently.
The latest Derby Media Poll had Justify in the top spot but six horses received at least one first place vote in the poll. “The Kentucky Derby is front-loaded with horses oozing with star potential,” said Churchill Downs racing analyst Joe Kristufek. “It could be epic.” Justify got 12 first-place votes in the poll and was followed by Magnum Moon, Bolt d’Oro, Mendelssohn, Audible, Good Magic and Vino Rosso.
Early Kentucky Derby Pick
If you are looking for an early Kentucky Derby value pick then go with Magnum Moon at odds of just over 8-1. Battaglia has already gone on record as saying that he is going to make Magnum Moon either the second or the third choice on the morning line in Kentucky Derby betting and that probably means Kentucky Derby odds of about 6-1. Magnum Moon has some definitely value at odds of over 8-1.
