League of Legends

Even though they are on a three-game losing streak heading into playoffs, Team Liquid are the odds-on favorite to win the 2019 NA LCS Spring Split. Liquid have been the best team in the region throughout the year, and no one is discounting their chances after their recent losing run. They already had the No. 1 seed in North America all wrapped up, and while they weren’t quite trolling in those last three games, they weren’t playing great team compositions either. Liquid are looking to win their third straight title.

The Favorite

Somehow Liquid are even better than they were last year. Liquid added mid laner Jensen from Cloud9 and brought over CoreJJ from Korea to be their support, and that has taken this team to new heights.

Jensen has by far the best KDA in the region. He has a 14.2 KDA in 18 games, and he hasn’t performed poorly on any champion. This is a meta that suits him well. He is at his best when he can push his lane and be aggressive, and we have only seen him on a tank once this season.

CoreJJ has made Doublelift even better in the bottom lane. He is not a support that likes to engage and instead relies more on keeping his AD Carry alive, but he does a very good job of it. Doublelift has a 7.4 KDA this season, and that’s somewhat due to CoreJJ keeping him alive.

Top laner Impact and jungler Xmithie are also among the region’s best at their positions. This team will only have to face one of the other top contenders in North America in all likelihood, and that also gives their chances a boost.

The Contenders

Cloud9 have the best coach in North America. Reapered has consistently put C9 in a position to win although I think they have just two elite players (Licorice and Zeyzal). He was a big part of why C9 made it to the semifinals of Worlds last year, and C9 have continued to be solid.

Licorice can win in the top lane, and that will be an important win condition. This is a meta that favors strong top laners, and that’s a good sign for C9. However, they are 0-2 against Liquid this season.

Team SoloMid have been the hottest team in the region. TSM have won 11 of their last 12 games, and the only loss was a game they should have won against C9. They have beaten Liquid in both meetings between the teams, and Bjergsen is playing at an otherworldly level.

The bottom lane has been rock solid for TSM too with Zven looking much better than he did in 2018, and both Broken Blade and Akaadian have improved by leaps and bounds. TSM have to play one more series than the other two contenders, but I like their odds the most of any team in North America.

The Longshots

I’ll come right out and say it. I don’t think any of the longshots have a real chance of upsetting the apple cart. FlyQuest are the best of the bunch, but there are a lot of question marks. Pobelter is a great set-up man, but WildTurtle is not a reliable bottom laner and V1per is very streaky in the top lane.

Golden Guardians turned it on over the last half of the season to make the playoffs, and I give them a lot of credit for coming together as a veteran team. Froggen has been especially good in the mid lane, but this team just doesn’t have the pieces to challenge a top team.

As for Echo Fox, they were fortunate to make the postseason. They needed a win over Counter Logic Gaming on the last day to clinch their spot, and while I do like their bottom lane, the play from the top lane and jungle hasn’t been there.
