League of Legends 2020 World Championship Preview

There were no surprises in the Group Stage of the 2020 League of Legends World Championship. All the favorites made it through to the knockout rounds unscathed, and none of those teams really had a scare. Teams from all of the minor regions and North America have been eliminated, leaving only sides from Europe, Korea, and China to duke it out for the Summoners’ Cup.

The two favorites coming into this year’s Worlds were Top Esports and DAMWON Gaming, and both of those teams have looked the part. Both teams went 5-1 in the Group Stage, claiming a No. 1 seed prior to the quarterfinal draw.

Top Esports have the easier matchup in the quarterfinals. They will face LEC side Fnatic, and they are heavy favorites to advance to the semifinals. There isn’t an area where Fnatic have the advantage over TES except perhaps jungle.

Knight is considered the best mid laner in the world in the eyes of most observers, and JackeyLove has been worth his hefty contract after being signed at the tail end of spring.

JackeyLove has an impressive 9.1 KDA and a 78.2 percent kill percentage, and his 36.1 percent damage share per Games of Legends is insane considering he played three games on Senna. Jungler Karsa had the best KDA in the Group Stage too with a 10.8 KDA.

The only team with better laners than Top Esports is DAMWON Gaming. DAMWON are the LCK’s best hope of bringing a title back to Korea, and they have looked unstoppable through the last three months. They ripped through Korea over the latter half of the Summer Split, and this team has two incredible talents in Nuguri and ShowMaker.

Top laner Nuguri is probably the most skilled player at his position in the world, and he is so talented that he can win his lane even after falling behind early. As for ShowMaker, the legends of DWG’s mid laner tearing up solo queue are incredible at this point, and he has put it together on stage. The perceived weak link all year has been the bottom lane yet Ghost currently leads the team in KDA. They have a more favorable draw than TES, so that makes them the top bet of the favorites.

JD Gaming had a bit of a rocky showing in the Group Stage, but they showed their potential with their win over DAMWON Gaming on the last day. This team is incredibly undervalued given what we have seen from them this year, as JDG bested Top Esports in five games to win the LPL Spring Split title and narrowly lost the Summer Split title in five games to TES.

The Dumpling Brothers are two of the best at their positions, but they had some issues in the Group Stage. Neither Zoom nor Yagao had a pop-off moment, as both players barely posted kill percentages over 50. Jungler Kanavi is the X-Factor though. On his best day, Kanavi can be the top jungler in the world, and in this jungler focused meta, that could lead to JDG pulling off multiple upsets.

Every other team is at least 12-1, but they all have flaws. G2 Esports are probably the most intriguing option given what we saw from them last year, yet they have been rather underwhelming throughout the season and finished behind Suning in the Group Stage.
