League of Legends 2020 LEC Summer Split Preview

The LEC Summer Split appears to be a two-horse race between G2 Esports and Fnatic yet again. These two organizations have combined to win all but one European League of Legends title, and they are the overwhelming favorites to win this year’s championship. G2 Esports have won the last three LEC titles, and they crushed Fnatic in the Spring Split Finals back in mid-April. That has led to the oddsmakers installing them as odds-on favorites per the League of Legends betting odds.

It’s hard to go against G2 Esports considering their dominance of this region over the last year and a half. Perkz and Caps appear set to switch roles once more with Caps returning to the mid lane and Perkz returning to the bottom lane, and it’s incredible that this team was so dominant in the Spring Split despite Caps looking a bit like a fish out of water in the bottom lane.

Perkz and Caps are probably the two most talented players in the region, but this team is more than just their two stars. Wunder has been superb in the top lane, and Jankos was the MVP in each of the last two splits. Mikyx has been as reliable as ever in the top lane, and Grabbz has done a good job of keeping this team focused. This team is clearly the team to beat in the summer.

Fnatic have the best chance of upsetting G2, yet there may be a mental block for this team. They continue to have their hearts ripped out by their rivals, and their crushing loss in the Spring Split Finals was tough to swallow.

Nemesis is one of the best mid laners in the region, and Rekkles and Hylissang are a superb bottom lane. Rekkles continues to show why he is considered the greatest European AD Carry of all time after an up and down 2019 season. Bwipo can keep opponents off balance with his pocket picks in the top lane, while jungler Selfmade should develop better chemistry with his teammates after his first split with Fnatic in spring.

The third-best team in Europe continues to be Origen. This organization hoped to shake off that moniker with the addition of three new players last year, but they still can’t get past G2 or Fnatic.

Nukeduck continues to show high upside in the mid lane, and Xerxe is still thriving in the jungle. The key for this team’s improvement is in the bottom lane though. Upset and Destiny were a solid duo in the spring, but they need to raise their game another level for Origen to challenge G2 and Fnatic. If they can’t do that, this team’s ceiling is third.

The Mad Lions pulled off the upset of the season when they knocked off G2 in the first round of the Spring Split Playoffs. They punished the reigning champions for their overaggressive play, and that led to a third-place finish for the upstart organization.

This team’s strength is in the bottom lane. Carzzy and Kaiser were fantastic in their first split together, and that gives Mad Lions hope for the future. Shadow was excellent in the jungle too, and Humanoid outperformed expectations with his best split of his career in spring.

If any team is going to knock off Fnatic or G2 though, my money is on Rogue. This team fell apart at the end of last split, but the individual talent is there. Inspired is very underrated in the jungle, Larssen is the next great European mid laner, and Hans Sama is reliable in the bottom lane. Coaching was a major issue with this team, yet the potential is undeniable.
