SuperNova Malta will be the first, but hopefully not the last, professional Esports competition to take place on the tiny island off the coast of Sicily. Eight teams have come from different parts of the globe in order to take part in this event, and they will be fighting for a $150,000 prize purse. Team Liquid are the overwhelming favorites entering this competition, but there are plenty of reasons to doubt their chances to win this event.

Six of the eight teams participating in this event are off this weekend, but Team Liquid and NRG are going to participate in this competition right after taking part in the ECS Season Six Finals, giving themselves no breaks in between competitions. Additionally, the tournament both teams are at is in Arlington, Texas, and that is seven time zones away from Malta.
Interestingly enough, Liquid and NRG are squaring off for the right to remain in the ECS Season Six Finals on Friday. NRG was thumped by Ninjas in Pyjamas in their first match, while Liquid was unable to beat North, forcing them into a double elimination set. There will be some solace for the loser of that tilt, as that will mean extra rest coming into this event.
This was a tournament that Liquid entered for a win and the prestige more than for the prize money. Liquid have made some large acquisitions recently, and that has helped them improve their positions in many events, but they have been unable to defeat the cream of the crop CS:GO teams in the world. They will want to prove they can win a competition with a strong performance here.
I would have liked Hellraisers’ chances to break through at SuperNova Malta quite a bit, but they made a change just two weeks ago, and we really don’t know how that will pan out. On paper, Hobbit has looked like a stronger player than bondik over the course of the year, so you understand why HellRaisers made the move to switch them. However, there is still something to be said about chemistry and fit, and that’s something of an unknown here.
BIG have not been a bad team this year, and they are tied with HellRaisers as the second-favorite entering this competition. However, they have not really proved themselves against the best in the world, hovering between the major and premier tiers for almost the entirety of the season. BIG have won a major this year, and they did finish runner-up at ESL One: Cologne, but they were unable to knock off NRG at the Summit, so it’s hard to be more optimistic regarding their chances.
Hellraisers’ decision to replace bondik with Hobbit really hurt Gambit Esports as well. Hobbit had been one of the best players on Gambit, and they had to move fast to replace him. They ended up rolling the dice on Ax1le ahead of this competition, but he has only been on the squad for 10 days, and the team he was on beforehand is a relative unknown.
It’s somewhat sad to see Virtus Pro bringing up the rear in terms of the SuperNova Malta betting odds. Virtus were one of the best teams in the world, but they have switched three players out at three different times this season and they could not get consistency throughout the year. They are unlikely to do much better than sit and wait and wait to be knocked out.
