Next week, the KeSPA Cup will get underway and provide us with the League of Legends fix we have needed. League of Legends is the most popular Esport in the world in and has the largest global reach due to its structure. Korea is the heart and soul of the game, and more Korean players are on rosters than players from any other country in the world. That will make the KeSPA Cup incredibly interesting as 19 Korean teams battle for supremacy over a two-week period. Whereas this competition was somewhat small in the past, this year’s event will feature every LCK team, every Challenger team, and the best amateur team in the country. That should make it very exciting.

This will be our first chance to see players on their new teams after the roster shakeup that has occurred over the last month. Given the failings of Korea on the global stage, there was bound to be a lot of change, and almost every major team shook things up drastically.
One of the teams that I’m most excited to see is Gen.G. The 2017 World Champions were able to knock off KingZone DragonX to get to Worlds yet again, but they bombed in the Group Stage and won just one of their six matches. CoreJJ, Haru, Crown, and Ambition all left as a result, and Gen.G resolved to address their jungle woes by signing the best jungler in the game today. Peanut has been the most talented, and most consistent, jungler for three straight years (with apologies to Karsa), and he will fix a lot of issues that they had. A proactive player is needed, and Peanut will certainly be active. The one to watch though is Life. Life has been the team’s reserve support since March, and now he will be thrust into the spotlight.
SK Telecom T1 were expected to make wholesale changes after a disastrous 2018 season, and they have done just that over the past month. The entire coaching staff was let go, as well as all but three players from last year’s team. This year, SKT went after strong laners to pair with Faker so that the mid laner wasn’t asked to do so much. Khan was the most talented Korean top laner over the course of the year, so nabbing him was big. The support position should see a major upgrade too as Mata comes over from KT Rolster. There are questions about their AD Carry and jungler though. Teddy has been one of the top late game AD Carries in the game for some time, but the game has pivoted more towards getting early leads. In the jungle, they are rolling the dice with either Clid or Haru to step up.
The performance of KT Rolster is something to watch too. KT seemed like they would finally break their drought at this year’s Worlds, but they were upset by eventual champions Invictus Gaming in five games and watched their team split up in the offseason. Smeb and Score stayed but everyone else departed, and there are major bottom lane concerns. Gango is the team’s lone bottom laner, and he spent last year playing in Japan. That’s a considerable step down from the LCK, and many are worried that he won’t live up to expectations in Korea. The same is true of his bottom lane partner, Snowflower. Snowflower revamped his image in Turkey last year, but at least he has had success in Korea before and there are fewer questions about him. BDD is going to be a force in the mid lane though.
Finally, there’s Griffin. Everyone’s favorite Cinderella story was the only team not to switch up its roster in the offseason, and the debutantes are looking to crash the party once more. Their chemistry has been incredible for such a young team, and they should be the favorites entering this event.
