G2 Esports became the first European team to win a major international tournament since 2011 last month. G2 knocked off SK Telecom T1 and Team Liquid in order to win the Mid-Season Invitational, and they are looking to add another domestic title to their list of accomplishments. Fnatic and Origen are out to stop them, but that will be tough considering how overpowering G2 proved to be in the Spring Split.

I figured that G2 would be an odds-on favorite considering their MSI title and how thoroughly they dominated the Spring Split. G2 went 12-1 through their first 13 games in the spring, but they lost four of their last five after taking their foot off the gas pedal. It was obvious that they were playing things close to the vest in anticipation of the Spring Split Playoffs, and they left no doubt who was the best team in the region there. They swept Origen 3-0 in the semifinals and swept them again in the finals after they knocked off Fnatic in the loser’s bracket.
G2 are the most individually skilled team in Europe, and they can play through any lane. At MSI, we saw them surprise with pocket picks like Pyke in the top lane, and you can be sure more of that is in store. Mid laner Caps, top laner Wunder, and AD Carry Perkz are fantastic, and all three players have shined on a number of champions. It’s going to be very tough to beat them as long as winning in the early game is important because G2 can play through any of their lanes.
It appears that Fnatic might be ready to make a change. Long-time jungler Broxah is the second-longest tenured player on the team, but Fnatic brought Dan up from their academy roster last week to challenge him for his starting role. There has been no word yet on who will start the season in the jungle, as Fnatic are a team that plays things close to the vest.
There are other concerns for Fnatic coming into the Summer Split. Bwipo was not great on top lane carries in the spring, and there must be a change in that regard. Fnatic tried to keep him on tanks for the vast majority of the season, but the meta clearly did not favor that.
Hylissang needs to reel in his aggression too. The support tried to be a playmaker too many times and ended up handing over his life for nothing in return. That doesn’t allow Rekkles to build like he prefers, taking a potential win condition away from Fnatic.
Origen are going to be very interesting to watch this split. They were the first team to beat G2 thanks to Nukeduck’s Zed, and they won their final six regular season games to finish the year as the second-place team. Origen handled Fnatic quite handily in the playoffs, but they still have a ways to go to challenge G2.
Nukeduck is the second-best mid laner in Europe behind Caps, and he kept this team competitive through the first part of the year. However, what made this team one of the best was the emergence of Patrik and Mithy in the bottom lane. The duo showed their versatility by playing four different bottom lane combinations against Fnatic in the playoffs, and Patrik consistently got the better of Rekkles. If they can keep building synergy, this team will be tough.
If you’re looking for a longshot with some potential, take a look at SK Gaming. As long as the early game continues to favor aggressive teams, they have the ability to knock off some of the top teams with Selfmade patrolling the jungle. He was instrumental in SK knocking off Fnatic in both meetings in the Spring Split, and if Sacre can play well in the top lane, this team can make some noise.
