2019 China LPL Summer Split Preview

Last year, China was home to the best teams in League of Legends. Royal Never Give Up claimed the Mid-Season Invitational, and Invictus Gaming won the World Championship. However, China is looking for a bit of redemption after Invictus Gaming’s stunning loss to Team Liquid at this year’s MSI. It’s no surprise that RNG and Invictus are the favorites to win the Summer Split, but 14 other teams would like to upturn the conventional wisdom and earn a chance to succeed on the international stage.

Invictus are the defending world champions, and they won the LPL Spring Split. They are deserved favorites, but to be honest, I’m a little surprised they aren’t bigger favorites given their pedigree. IG were dominant all throughout 2018, losing just twice in the regular season, but I guess that’s what happens when you play in a 16-team league.

This team is loaded. IG has the best top laner and mid laner in the league in TheShy and Rookie. The rumors of TheShy’s decline were greatly exaggerated, and he shined in the LPL Spring Split Playoffs. He proved without a shout of a doubt he is the best hard carry top laner in the league, and he has the skill to overcome an early deficit.

Rookie has been the best mid laner in China for two years now. It took him a while to win a title, but there’s no one better in all phases of the position than him. Those two are the reason why I think Invictus are the best bet on the board.

Royal Never Give Up have the best chance to knock off Invictus. They have a great jungler in Karsa, a solid mid laner in Xiaohu, and the best AD Carry of all time in Uzi. However, there is a major concern in the top lane coming into the Summer Split.

Zz1tai was steamrolled by JD Gaming’s Zoom in the playoffs, and that led to RNG’s top laner announcing his retirement a few weeks ago. The team brought in Langx (formerly XiaoAL) from Suning to replace him, and he will compete with AmazingJ for the right to be the team’s primary top laner. One of the two must be able to effectively counter TheShy if RNG are going to compete for the title though.

Top Esports are an intriguing team. They are the third favorite on the board, and they have a mid laner that really shined in the Spring Split in Knight. Knight had one of the best KDAs in the LPL per Games of Legends, and his damage numbers were pretty impressive too.

Knight and Top’s Korean bottom lane of Loken and Ben give this team a chance to knock off IG and RNG in order to win their first LPL title. Loken finished with a 7 KDA in the Spring Split, and he was fantastic on both Lucian and Kai’Sa.

I’m a bit surprised to see FunPlus Phoenix as the team with the fourth-best odds. FPP were the best team during the regular season in the Spring Split, and they have a phenomenal mid laner in Doinb. He is a great utility mid laner in that he makes everyone around him better, but the lack of proven talent around him has many experts doubting FPP’s chances of repeating.
