2018 League of Legends Challengers

We are guaranteed to have some new blood in the LCK in 2019. Either Damwon Gaming or BattleComics will win promotion to the LCK 2019 Spring Split depending on the outcome of their match on Thursday, and whoever wins that match will look to follow in the footsteps of Griffin.

However, as one team goes up another team must go down. Either BBQ Olivers or MVP will drop down from the LCK to Challenger Series in 2019. That loss of prestige is heartbreaking to some longtime pros, and both teams will desperately try to avoid that on Friday.

2018 League of Legends Challengers Korea Summer Promotion Betting Lines

MVP -169 BBQ Olivers +124

Both MVP and BBQ lost to the Challenger Series teams they faced on Tuesday. That put them in the loser’s bracket in the battle to stay in the LCK and the loser here will be doomed to relegation.

Since these teams were both in the LCK for the Spring and Summer Splits, they have plenty of experience against each other. MVP won all four games against BBQ in the Spring Split, sweeping them in two series, and they won both series in the Summer Split too. MVP is 8-1 against BBQ this year, and that has led to them being the deserved favorite.

Additionally, MVP has been in this situation before. They outlasted Kongdoo Monster to survive during the last relegation battle, and they know how to keep their emotions in check. That’s an underrated aspect for eSports players.

Player to Watch

It will be interesting to see whether or not Aries is BBQ’s AD Carry for this series. Aries was a surprise starter for both games against Damwon Gaming, but he did not have a good outing. He posted a scant 1.1 KDA in two games on Xayah and made a number of mistakes.

Aries had an ominous start. Six minutes into BBQ’s first game, he realized that his mouse settings weren’t right, and that he needed to adjust. Forgetting to change something as simple as that probably showed that nerves had gotten the best of him.

To be fair to Aries, he was thrust into this position rather unexpectedly. He had only started four games during the Summer Split, with Ghost being the team’s primary AD Carry. The coaching staff decided to put their faith in Aries over Ghost, but it didn’t pay off. It will be interesting to see whether or not they will continue to put their trust in him.

Prediction

There are a couple match-ups that will go a long way to deciding this series. MVP’s Yondu and BBQ’s Trick are two of the more respected junglers in Korea, and both players are capable of getting their teams ahead. Yondu is known for his incredibly deep champion pool and his aggressiveness, while Trick is known for his creative pathing.

The support battle is one to keep an eye on too. Both Max and IgNar are playmaking supports, but they have different styles. Max’s version of making plays consists of unique selections that highlight his aggressiveness in an attempt to snowball the lane, while IgNar drafts more standard champions but is constantly roaming and looking to make deep flanks to win team fights.

MVP is my pick to win this one, although I think BBQ will win a game or two. MVP was just the better team in the regular season and an 8-1 record is nothing to sneeze at.
