Undefeated Heavyweight Trevor Bryan to Veteran Derric Rossy on August 28

Trevor-Bryan-vs-Derric-Rossy-wager

As an amateur, Trevor Bryan – 15-0, 11 KOs – racked up five national championships in 60 bouts and came close to qualifying for the U.S. Olympics trials in 2011. Now as a pro, he’s undefeated against low-level opponents. But he’s stepping up his level of opposition in a match against the veteran Derric Rossy – 30-9, 14 KOs – and perhaps we’ll get a better view of his ceiling.

HOW GOOD IS BRYAN?

Since his debut in November 2011, the 6’4” Bryan has been extremely active, notching an impressive 10 of his 11 knockout victories by the third round. Most recently, he put the outclassed Stacy Frazier down for the count in the second round. Now, it’s time for the prospect to prove himself against a veteran heavyweight.

“On paper, it looks like it’ll be an exciting fight and I’m definitely looking at it as a breakout fight for me,” Bryan said. “I feel excitement, not pressure. It’s time for people to start mentioning my name with the others. I’ve had a great training camp, I continue to feel confident with trainer Stacey McKinely and I feel strong, mentally clear and confident. I’m ready to roll.”

During his 11-year career, Rossy has faced former WBO heavyweight champion Ray Mercer, title contenders in Eddie Chambers and Fres Oquendo, and highly ranked fighters such as Vyacheslav Glazkov. The fight against Glazkov, the IBF No. 2-rated contender, was a highly controversial 10-round majority decision that many felt should have gone to Rossy.

“Bryan has the pedigree to maybe be a heavyweight champion someday,” said Rossy. “But not now. In my eyes I feel he’s making a mistake, but anybody that fights me know they are looking at a war. I am a high-risk, low-reward kind of opponent. I’ve fought them all – Bryan is a little green in that area so we’ll see.”

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Just 25 years old, Bryan has a long career ahead of him. He’s got decent power, but he relies more on slick technical boxing that defines most Olympic hopefuls. Rossy has a very meat-and-potatoes game, and his lack of speed and legit power has held him back his entire career. However, he does have a certain grit that can surprise his opponents and make it seem like he’s been overlooked.

It’s doubtful that Bryan will write off Rossy – this is the most significant fight of his career. This is a case of a promising young stud taking on an old lion, and Bryan’s youth and speed will be too much for Rossy, who should put up a valiant effort. The pick is Bryan to win by majority decision.
