Shakur Stevenson vs Robson Conceicao Preview
We knew that Shakur Stevenson was special during his amateur career. He won both of his fights for the USA Knockouts in the World Series of Boxing, and he was the most successful US boxer at the 2016 Summer Olympics, claiming a silver medal. Stevenson turned pro as a featherweight in early 2017, and he had no trouble with his first 12 opponents. That led to a title shot against Joet Gonzalez for the WBO featherweight belt, and he easily won a unanimous decision to claim the belt.
After that victory, Stevenson made the move up to super featherweight. He knocked out Felix Caraballo in his first match and then scored a convincing unanimous decision over Toka Khan Clary. Stevenson then faced Jeremiah Nakathila for the interim WBO super featherweight title, and he claimed the belt in a dud of a fight as neither boxer showed much aggression. He responded to the critics in his next fight, knocking out Jamel Herring to become a two-division champion.
In his most recent fight, Shakur Stevenson easily controlled the action against Oscar Valdez to win the WBC and The Ring super featherweight belts. Stevenson scored a knockdown and won a comfortable unanimous decision with the judges deciding the bout 117-110, 118-109, and 118-110 in his favor.
Robson Conceicao won the gold medal as a lightweight at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He made his professional debut on the undercard of a Manny Pacquiao fight, and he had no trouble with his first 16 opponents. However, he faced Valdez for the WBC super featherweight title last September and lost a unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight 115-112, 115-112, and 117-110 in favor of Valdez.
Conceicao easily defeated Xavier Martinez in a title eliminator back in January to earn another title shot. He does have some things working in his advantage ahead of this fight. Conceicao has a 70-inch reach compared to a 68-inch reach for Stevenson, and Conceicao is two inches taller. However, Stevenson is nine years younger and much fresher than his opponent, and he hasn’t taken many real shots over the course of his career.
This should be a comfortable win for Stevenson. He has extremely quick hands that allow him to jab and counter effectively, and he could end up scoring a finish too.
