Ryan Garcia vs Javier Fortuna Boxing Odds

Ryan Garcia vs Javier Fortuna Boxing Betting

Unbeaten Ryan Garcia is one of the most exciting young prospects in boxing. Garcia (22-0 with 18 knockouts) has yet to win a major title, but the 23-year-old was the first American boxer to ink a deal with Gatorade last year. He has already been compared to Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao, and a win over Javier Fortuna would likely set up a long-awaited title shot with either Devin Haney or Gervonta Davis. Fortuna (37-3-1-2 with 26 knockouts) is not a pushover though and is a former super featherweight champion.

Ryan Garcia and Javier Fortuna will meet at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Saturday, July 16, 2022. This fight will be broadcast on DAZN with the event starting at 8 p.m. ET and the main event expected to get underway at approximately 11 p.m. ET.

Ryan Garcia vs Javier Fortuna Preview

After an incredible amateur career, Ryan Garcia turned pro at the age of 17. As with many other talented young boxers, he went south of the border to fight in Mexico but signed with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions shortly after turning 18.

Garcia put in a lot of work early in his career. He went 10-0 in his first 13 months as a professional fighter, and he knocked out nine of those opponents. He scored a first-round knockout over former WBA bantamweight title challenger Mario Macias in that stretch, setting up a title shot in September 2017.

Miguel Carrizoza was no match for Garcia, and Garcia knocked him out in the first round to take home the WBC-NABF Junior super featherweight belt. Garcia defended that belt twice with two early knockouts and then challenged for the regular title instead of the junior version in May 2018. That was his toughest test, but he won a unanimous decision over Jayson Velez. Garcia nearly lost his next fight though, narrowly winning a majority decision over Carlos Morrales.

Since that escape, Garcia has been dominant. He has added other minor titles to his resume and beat Luke Campbell for the interim WBC lightweight belt last January. Unfortunately, Garcia was unable to challenge for the regular title as he had to postpone two fights due to different issues. He finally returned to the ring in February and dominated former IBO lightweight title holder Emmanuel Tagoe to win a unanimous decision.

Javier Fortuna only recently moved up to lightweight. Fortuna was an extremely successful featherweight and super featherweight, winning the WBA featherweight title and the WBA super featherweight title. He was 29-0-1 and had successfully defended the latter belt once before losing to Jason Sosa in June 2016.

Shortly after that loss, Fortuna made the move up to lightweight. He won his first four fights at the new class to challenge Robert Easter Jr. for the IBF lightweight belt, but he lost a split decision to Easter after failing to make weight. He suffered a No Contest in his next bout after a freak accident, and then he won his next three fights to set up another title shot.

Unfortunately, Fortuna was unable to beat Joseph Diaz for the interim WBC lightweight belt. He lost a unanimous decision despite Diaz being deducted a point for a shot behind the head. It was a rough defeat, and Fortuna can’t afford another loss if he still wants to be considered a real contender at this weight.
