Two of the best bantamweight boxers in the world will square off in Los Angeles on Memorial Day weekend when Nordine Oubaali defends his WBC bantamweight belt against Nonito Donaire. Donaire (40-6 with 26 knockouts) has won titles in four different weight classes over the last 14 years.
This will be Nordine Oubaali’s second fight in the United States. His only previous fight was in Las Vegas, so this will be new ground for him. Meanwhile, Nonito Donaire has boxed all across America.

Nordine Oubaali vs Nonito Donaire Preview
Oubaali was a bronze medalist at the 2007 World Championships, but rather than turn pro, he decided to continue to compete as an amateur in order to participate in the Summer Olympics. Unfortunately, he was never able to advance further than the quarterfinals in 2008 or 2012, and he didn’t become a professional until 2014.
His first fight was against Sergey Tasimov in Morocco. Oubaali won that bout and three others before challenging Hassan Azaouagh for the French bantamweight belt. He won that contest by first round knockout, and that started a streak where he won four straight fights in the first round.
We saw Oubaali beat former flyweight champion Julio Cesar Miranda by 12th round TKO to win the WBA Inter-Continental bantamweight belt in December 2016. He won the WBC Silver bantamweight belt six months later and defended the belt once before challenging Rau’shee Warren for the WBC bantamweight title in January 2019. Oubaali won that bout and successfully defended that belt against Arthur Villanueva and Takuma Inoue before the end of the year. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been in the ring in 18 months due to COVID issues.
Donaire didn’t have the best start to his career. He lost his second fight, but he let that fuel him in his drive to become one of the best in the sport. That led to Donaire reeling off 30 straight victories.
In that stretch, he claimed the IBF and IBO flyweight titles, the WBA super flyweight title, the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles, and the IBF and The Ring super bantamweight titles. In all, he won major titles in four divisions in five years before his loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux in April 2013.
That setback started a bit of a yo-yo effect on Donaire’s career. He beat Simpiwe Vetyeka for the WBA super featherweight belt in May 2014, but he lost that belt five months later.
Donaire went on to defeat Cesar Juarez to claim the WBO super bantamweight belt in December 2015, and he defended that strap one time before losing a unanimous decision to Jessie Magdaleno.
In the last five years, Donaire is 3-3 including the loss to Magdaleno. He lost a unanimous decision to Carl Frampton for the WBO interim featherweight belt, but he knocked off Ryan Burnett and Stephon Young to win the WBA super bantamweight title. Donaire had a chance to win the IBF and The Ring bantamweight titles against Naoya Inoue, but he lost a unanimous decision in November 2019.
