Estrada isn’t a big favorite, but it is interesting to see the oddsmakers give him the edge given his earlier loss to Gonzalez. Juan Francisco Estrada vs Roman Gonzalez Preview

Both these fighters have a ton of experience under the belts, yet neither boxer would be considered old. Estrada is 30 years old, while Gonzalez is only three years his elder.

Estrada currently holds the WBC and The Ring super flyweight belts. He was 26-1 headed into his previous fight with Gonzalez, and that was his first major title fight at the tender age of 22 years old. Since then, he has proven to be one of the best in multiple weight classes.

He beat Brian Viloria by split decision for the WBA and WBO flyweight belts in his next bout. Estrada successfully defended that strap five times, and then he decided to make the jump to super flyweight. That initially didn’t work out well as he lost a majority decision to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai for the WBC and The Ring super flyweight belts in February 2018.

After two convincing wins, Estrada earned a rematch with Rungvisai. This time he made the most of the opportunity with a unanimous decision victory to claim both straps. Estrada has since successfully defended the belt twice with late TKO wins over Dewayne Beamon and Carlos Cuadras.

Gonzalez has been absolutely dominant over the course of his career. His first championship came in September 2008 when he beat Yutaka Niida for the WBA minimumweight belt, but he slowly added the weight to be able to garner a bigger profile and draw bigger paydays.

He beat Francisco Rosas by second round KO for the WBA interim light flyweight belt in October 2010. Gonzalez went on to defend that title five times, and then he made the move to flyweight. His ninth round TKO of Akira Yaegashi proved that was a wise decision as he went on to win the WBC and The Ring flyweight titles.

Those belts were successfully defended four times before he rose another division to take on Cuadras. Gonzalez won a unanimous decision over Cuadras to claim the WBC super flyweight belt, but he lost the strap to Rungvisai by majority decision. He lost the rematch with Rungvisai by knockout six months later, so he was forced to keep a naked waist for his next two bouts.

Gonzalez secured a ninth-round TKO of Kal Yafai in February of last year to win the WBA super flyweight belt. He defended that belt against Israel Gonzalez in Mexico City in October.
