Jose Zepeda vs Regis Prograis Preview

This will be the third time that Jose Zepeda has challenged for a major title belt. He was stopped in the second round by Terry Flanagan back in July 2015 when he took on Flanagan for the WBO lightweight title, and Zepeda lost a majority decision to Jose Ramirez for the WBC light welterweight belt in February 2019. Those were the only two losses of his career, and he does not want to be a bridesmaid any longer.

Zepeda was 23-0 before he took on Flanagan, but the champion showed him just what he needed to do in order to truly contend. That led to Zepeda dropping down to the less competitive light welterweight division where he knocked out five of his next seven opponents, claiming two minor titles along the way, before he lost to Ramirez. Since that defeat, he has won five straight fights and won the WBC Silver light welterweight belt over Ivan Baranchyk two years ago. Zepeda defended that belt twice with wins over Hank Lundy and Josue Vargas.

Regis Prograis turned pro a little over a decade ago. He was fantastic on his way to a 15-0 start, eventually winning the WBC-NABF Junior and then regular light welterweight belts. Prograis was 20-0 when he challenged Julius Indongo for the interim WBC light welterweight title, and he scored a second-round TKO to earn the belt.

He went on to take part in the World Boxing Super Series where he defeated Terry Flanagan with ease. Prograis won the WBA light welterweight belt with a sixth-round TKO of Kiryl Relikh, but he lost the belt and a chance at the IBF and The Ring titles with the majority decision loss to Josh Taylor. Since that defeat, Prograis has went on to win all three of his most recent matches by TKO inside of six rounds.

There is hope for Zepeda in this fight as he holds a significant reach advantage. Zepeda has a 70.5-inch reach compared to a 67-inch reach for Prograis, and that is his ticket for pulling off the upset. He might be worth a bet at this price considering that edge.
