Jermell Charlo vs Jeison Rosario Preview

Jermell Charlo doesn’t have the same power as his slightly older brother, but he is a more gifted technical boxer. He eschewed the 2008 Summer Olympics in order to go pro early, and that has led to Charlo having a few more fights than his twin. However, he had to wait longer for his first title shot, running his record to 27-0 before he was able to take on John Jackson for the vacant WBC light middleweight belt in May 2016.

Charlo was dominated early by Jackson, winning just one of the first seven rounds. However, he came out swinging in the eighth round, securing a knockout with a flurry of blows to earn his first strap. He had no trouble with his next two opponents, knocking out Charles Hatley in the sixth round and Erickson Lubin in the first round, but Austin Trout showed that he was vulnerable, losing by a majority decision in Charlo’s third title defense.

That result foreshadowed what was to come later that year when Jermell Charlo suffered his first defeat. He lost to Tony Harrison by unanimous decision, but he defeated Jorge Cota six months later to earn a rematch with Harrison. Charlo avenged the loss with an 11th-round knockout to retake the WBC light middleweight belt.

Jeison Rosario lost his first fight on American soil, but he has yet to lose since that point. Rosario has been impressive since coming to the United States with unanimous decision victories over Justin DeLoach and Jamontay Clark and knockouts of Juan Carlos Rodriguez and Mark Anthony Hernandez. He earned a title shot by winning a split decision over Jorge Cota last April, and he made the most of it.

Rosario was a huge underdog per the boxing betting odds coming into his bout with Julian Williams in January. Williams held the WBA, IBF, and IBO light middleweight titles, and he was upwards of -3000 since he was fighting in his hometown of Philadelphia. That didn’t dissuade Rosario though, and he quickly pushed the tempo, leading to a fifth-round TKO that made him world champion.
