Gilberto Ramirez vs Sullivan Barrera Boxing Betting

Although he has a sterling record, Gilberto Ramirez is still something of an unknown to American audiences. Ramirez (41-0 with 27 knockouts) is one of the top Mexican boxers in the sport today, and he is gunning for a mega fight with Canelo Alvarez. Before that can take place though, he needs to take care of business against Sullivan Barrera (22-3 with 14 knockouts). Barrera is a former title contender at light heavyweight, and the veteran has made it to the 12th round of every fight over the course of his long professional career.

These two light heavyweights will square off on Friday, July 9, 2021, from Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, California. This fight will headline a DAZN promotion that will kick off at 9 p.m. ET.

Gilberto Ramirez vs Sullivan Barrera Preview

Gilberto Ramirez turned pro just two months after his 18th birthday. He followed in the footsteps of so many Mexican boxers before him by putting in a ton of work from the outset. Ramirez fought 12 bouts in his first year as a professional fighter, winning them all and scoring knockouts in 10 of them.

Ramirez won the WBC Youth middleweight belt just 16 months after turning pro. He successfully defended that title six times in the span of 16 months, and that led to him being 27-0 heading into his first major title fight.

In March 2014, he faced Giovanni Lorenzo for the WBO-NABO and NABF super middleweight titles, and he won a fifth-round TKO. Ramirez had four successful title defenses prior to facing Arthur Abraham for the WBO super middleweight belt two years later, and he scored a unanimous decision victory. He defended that title successfully five times but made the move to light heavyweight after only winning a majority decision in his second fight with Jesse Hart.

We saw Ramirez beat Tommy Karpency in his first light heavyweight bout. He followed that up with a 10th round TKO of Alfonso Lopez for the NABF light heavyweight belt in December.

Sullivan Barrera was part of Cuba’s prestigious amateur boxing program growing up. He won the gold medal at middleweight during the 2000 Junior World Championships in Budapest, but he couldn’t make his professional debut until 2009 as he was unsuccessful in his efforts to defect.

Barrera secured knockouts in his first five fights. He knocked off solid boxers like Jeff Lacy and Karo Murat, but he suffered a loss to unbeaten Andre Ward in March 2016. That set him back, but he knocked off Joe Smith Jr. to win the WBC International light heavyweight belt in July 2017.

That win led to a title shot against Dmitry Bivol. Barrera lasted until the final round before suffering a TKO defeat, but that’s a respectable loss since Bivol remains unbeaten as the current WBA light heavyweight title holder.

His unanimous decision win over Sean Monaghan in November 2018 was convincing, but his only bout since then came in June 2019 when he lost a unanimous decision to Jesse Hart. It’s been more than two years since Barrera last entered the ring.
