Erislandy Lara vs Greg Vendetti Preview

Lara turned pro at the age of 25 after defecting from Cuba. He was the favorite to win the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics, but instead he went to Germany and turned pro. That was an excellent decision, as he has showcased an incredible skillset over the last decade.

His first major title fight came in June 2013. Lara took on Alfredo Angulo for the interim WBA light middleweight title, and he defeated Angulo by TKO in the 10th round. He defended the strap against Austin Trout in his next match before losing a non-title catchweight bout to Canelo Alvarez by split decision.

After the controversial loss, Lara went back to light middleweight. He successfully defended his belt an additional six times before losing another controversial split decision in a unification fight for the WBA, IBO, and IBF light middleweight titles. In his last fight, he won back the WBA light middleweight belt with a quick second-round TKO of Ramon Alvarez.

Vendetti has spent most of his professional career boxing in the Boston area. He had a checkered start to his career with three embarrassing decisions against lesser foes, but he has been a different fighter since 2015. The Villain won 16 straight fights and knocked off top tier opponents like Casey James Streeter and Derek Silviera along the way.

For just the second time in his career, Vendetti left the United States for a bout in December 2018. He suffered a second-round TKO loss to Michel Soro in France, but he was able to fight for his first minor title upon his return. Vendetti took on Michael Anderson for the IBA light middleweight belt in July 2019, and he won a unanimous decision to claim the strap. That helped lead to the Lara camp selecting Vendetti for this title defense.
