Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney puts all his belts on the line in a scrap against former unified lightweight champ Vasiliy Lomachenko, scheduled to take place in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 20. Nearly one year ago Haney became the undisputed champ winning the WBA, IBF and WBO belts and retaining the WBC strap with a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten George Kambosos Jr. last June. The contract included a rematch clause which Kambosos invoked. The result was the same with Haney successfully defending his titles with another unanimous decision running his record to 29-0.
A seasoned boxer, Lomachenko has held multiple world championships in a trio of different weight classes. His last loss, which was just his second in 19 professional fights, saw Lomachenko surrender his WBA and WBO lightweight titles to Teofimo Lopez in a unanimous decision back in 2020. Lopez then lost a split decision to Kambosos 11 months later setting the stage for where we are today.

Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko Preview
The lightweight division is loaded with every bout between contenders having implications within the division. Haney is making a strong case to be and stay the best in the division taking on whoever wants to enter the ring with him. After twice defeating former champ Kambosos pretty significantly, Haney gets the opponent he asked for. And awaiting the winner is a possible showdown with current WBA regular lightweight champ Gervonta Davis.
We can’t put the cart before the horse, though, and if either fighter is looking ahead that will end quickly. Lomachenko has been around for some time and at the age of 35 he has only 19 professional fights on his resume. However, a distinguished amateur career saw the Ukrainian win all but one of his 396 fights. Included among them were two Olympic gold medals. Also, fighting at different levels exposed him to many different styles and opponents, so I doubt with all his experience that Lomachenko will be fazed by Haney.
Beating top talents Jorge Linares and Jose Pedraza on his way to claiming the WBO and WBA belts, the loss to Lopez in what called a controversial unanimous decision, was troubling. Lomachenko rebounded, though, with a pair of wins before returning to Ukraine to defend his country against the Russians. Returning to the ring after nearly a year, Lomachenko earned a unanimous decision over Jamaine Ortiz as a tune up for this fight.
It’s hard to say how much Lomachenko has left after a tough battle with his former sparring partner Ortiz, and Haney is a definite step up in competition. Lomachenko prides himself on staying out of trouble using superior footwork and overall athleticism to put up a strong defense. He may not be as quick as he once was, but Lomachenko is creative in the ring and accurate with his blows.
Bet Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko
Haney has knocked off all 29 opponents with most in impressive style. And his confident – borderline cocky – attitude was on full display pre-fight. When you hold all the belts and have yet to lose I guess you can talk the talk. Eight years younger than his opponent, Haney bested top competition to get here. And the bout with Lomachenko has been in the making for some time. Haney defends well with his impressive reach and uses jabs to wear down opponents. His stamina has never been questioned and neither has his punching ability. Lomachenko’s comeback story is impressive, but Haney is out to be the best and will take another step toward the elite level.
