The great Deontay Wilder will step into the ring for the first time in a year when he faces Robert Helenius in the Big Apple. Wilder (42-2-1 with 41 knockouts) hasn’t fought since he was knocked out by Tyson Fury for a second time last October. Helenius (31-3 with 20 knockouts) was on the undercard of that fight, but he will now be part of the main event as he faces his toughest opponent yet.
Deontay Wilder and Robert Helenius will meet on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the Barclays Center in New York City, New York. This is a Premier Boxing Champions promotion that will be broadcast on FOX PPV starting at 9 p.m. ET.
Deontay Wilder vs Robert Helenius Betting Odds
Deontay Wilder -700
Robert Helenius +471
To no one’s surprise, Deontay Wilder is a heavy favorite by the boxing betting odds on Saturday night. If you don’t know much about betting or betting on boxing, as a -700 favorite, you would need to bet $700 on Wilder to win $100. At this price, a $100 bet on Helenius would return $471 if he were to pull off the upset.
As the fight nears, there will be decision betting too. You will be able to bet on whether the fight is decided by KO, TKO, or decision, and you can bet on which boxer will win the fight in that fashion as well.
Deontay Wilder vs Robert Helenius Preview
If it wasn’t for Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder would be seen as an all-time great. Wilder is 41-0 with 40 knockouts against every other fighter he has faced as a pro, but he is 0-2-1 in his three fights against Fury. He knocked out his first 32 opponents in the first four rounds, and his only non-knockout victory came in his first major title fight.
Wilder needed to go the full 12 rounds when he faced Bermaine Stiverne for the WBC heavyweight championship in January 2015. While he didn’t secure the knockout blow, he absolutely dominated Stiverne on the scorecards to take the belt.
His knockout streak continued after that victory, as he rendered his opponents unable to continue in his next seven title defenses. Wilder knocked out top fighters like Eric Molina and Chris Arreola, but his first-round knockout of Stiverne in their rematch was extremely impressive. That led to a big showdown with Tyson Fury on December 2018 in Los Angeles, and the two fought to a split decision draw.
We saw Wilder keep the belt as a result of the decision, and he knocked out Dominic Breazeale and Luis Ortiz (for the second time) in his next two fights. However, he didn’t fare well in his rematch with Tyson Fury even though he was favored by the boxing betting odds. Wilder lost that fight by seventh-round TKO and he was knocked out in the 11th round by Fury in the trilogy.
Robert Helenius is a solid fighter, but Wilder is by far the toughest opponent he has faced to this point in his career. Helenius was only able to win a split decision against Derek Chisora, and he was knocked out by Johann Duhaupas (a fighter Wilder had no trouble beating) in April 2016.
Gerald Washington also scored a win over Helenius, and Washington also suffered a TKO loss to Wilder. Dillian Whyte was the third boxer to defeat Helenius, but we have since seen him bounce back with two consecutive wins over Adam Kownacki. That led to Helenius being named the WBA Gold heavyweight champion, and that set him up for the biggest chance of his career.
Wilder has a four-inch reach advantage over his opponent and he is two years younger than Helenius. While Helenius caries more weight, he hasn’t been able to knockout foes with anything close to the same regularity as Wilder.
