The bout between Vasiliy Lomachenko (12-1, 9 knockouts) and Anthony Crolla (34-6-2, 13 knockouts) will be for the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization lightweight championships. ESPN+ will have coverage of the bout from Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. This title fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.

Fight Preview

Lomachenko enters this fight universally regarded as the pound for pound king and unified champion. Anthony Crolla is the underdog mandatory challenger,

“Loma wants all the titles at lightweight and he wants to keep them and defend them,” said Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti.

Crolla realizes that he is a heavy underdog as he enters his first career fight in the United States. Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing emphasized the opportunity that Crolla has in this bout against Lomachenko.

“It’s a huge opportunity for Anthony Crolla,” Hearn said. “He has earned his stripes, a former world champ who has fought the best. He won the final eliminator against Yordan in November, and I’m happy he gets this chance now. Lomachenko is a great talent, but Anthony is in great shape and ready for this chance.”

Crolla is a past champion in his own right having defeated Darleys Perez for a world lightweight title by a fifth-round knockout in November of 2015. Crolla successfully defended the title bet once with a seventh-round knockout of Ismael Barroso but them lost it in his next bout against Jorge Linares. Crolla then went on to win three fights in a row to get his shot against Lomachenko.

Lomachenko boasts three titles in three different weight classes and is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner. The defending champ has stated that he may not remain in the lightweight class and even went on to say that its not his ideal weight category.

“My goal is to unify all four titles,” said Lomachenko. “And then we’ll see. Maybe I’ll move back down to 130 pounds and win world titles there for a second time.”

What is interesting about Lomachenko in regards to this fight is his admission that he doesn’t know much about Crolla. That being said he has been preparing methodically for this fight as an upset loss would be catastrophic to Lomachenko’s goals.

“I don’t know too much about him,” said the champ. “But I know him from his two fights with Jorge Linares. I do know he is an aggressive fighter. I like to fight guys that come forward.

“I’ll prepare like always. We are training hard. I will put on a great performance for my fans in Los Angeles and on ESPN. I’ll show everyone my best style and hope everyone enjoys it. I want to fight the best. But now, Crolla is the best choice. He is the mandatory challenger and wanted to fight me. That is why I accepted this fight.”
