Fight Preview

Yordenis Ugas is the mandatory challenger for this bout in which Shawn Porter will be making his first ever title defense of the WBC welterweight belt. Porter is a fan favorite and a natural draw that sets up well for this nationally televised fight.

“Shawn Porter is one of the most charismatic and exciting fighters in the sport and he’s sure to light up the screen on March 9 on Fox and Fox Deportes,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB promotions. “After winning a hard-fought close decision over Danny Garcia in September to capture the title, he will again have his hands full, this time with Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas, who has taken the division by storm, defeating top contenders and prospects to put himself in this mandatory position for his first world title. It’s a matchup of styles that is sure to generate a memorable night.”

The welterweight division is considered to be the best in boxing and this fight is considered a potential playoff path to a unification championship bid.

Porter has in his resume a dominant win over former world champion Albert Berto that helped offset the pain of a narrow championship loss to Keith Thurman in 2016. The Porter vs. Thurman bout was so good that it earned fight of the year honors. Porter was also welterweight champion in 2014 after he defeated Devon Alexander. His win over Broner was especially impressive as Broner is a famed four-division champion.

“We’ve already been in training camp for a few weeks working on conditioning and building up the fundamentals,” said Porter. “Ugas is a strong aggressive fighter who’s responsible with his defense. He’s a Cuban fighter and I know he won’t waiver from that. It’s going to be up to me to get him to drop his hands, take some risks and then land by shots. It should make for a very entertaining fight and I can’t wait to get back in the ring and do what I do best.”

“This is a huge opportunity for me to make my dreams come true of becoming a world champion on Fox,” said Ugas. “Shawn Porter is a great champion and someone I respect. When the bell rings I’m willing to heave it all on the line.”

Boxing Betting Tips

Ugas has impressive tenacity and a strong work ethic but Porter brings championship experience that trumps all of that.
