Jermell Charlo vs. Jorge Cota Betting

From the moment that Jermell Charlo went down to defeat in a 12 round unanimous decision to Tony Harrison for the World Boxing Council world super welterweight title he focused on a rematch. And in fact, a rematch was quickly arranged, much to the delight of fight fans everywhere. But Harrison had to back out due to an injured ankle and will not even be able to train for 10 weeks. Filling the void will be the potentially dangerous Jorge Cota, who packs a powerful punch to go with plenty of ambition. For Charlo the comeback trail to another title shot begins with this matchup. For Cota it’s the chance to prove he can fight at a championship level.

Fight Preview

On December 22, 2018, Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo tasted defeat for the first time in his professional career. Tony Harrison and Charlo went the full 12 rounds at Barclays Center in Brooklyn before Harrison walked away with Charlo’s title belt in a unanimous decision win. The defeat followed three consecutive successful title defenses for Charlo after he won the World Boxing Council light middleweight title against John Jackson on May 21, 2016.

Jorge Cota has the reputation of being a hard-scrabbled knockout artist. While he has never fought for a world championship, he certainly has the heart and desire of a man that wants his shot.

“I am very motivated,” said Cota. “I will shock the world on June 23 for Mexico, the country that I love. This is the most important fight of my career.”

“As we have seen from Andy Ruiz’s incredible upset of Anthony Joshua in the heavyweight championship fight, replacement fighters are not to be taken as a joke,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Jorge Cota is a dangerous fighter. He has heavy hands and he’s looking for an opportunity to make a statement. Jermell Charlo realizes just how serious this is and he wants to get his title back. I know he’s going to be prepared to make his own statement.”

As for Charlo he freely admits his disappointment about Harrison being unable to go for a rematch. It’s obvious that Charlo lives for nothing more than to avenge the only loss of his career.

“It feels like heartbreak,” said Charlo. “I was ready to destroy Tony Harrison and now I’m going to get in there and destroy Cota. I always pray for my opponent to have safe care and make it to the fight healthy. It’s unfortunate that Tony Harrison isn’t my next victim. I want the best for Harrison so I want him healed up and ready to go, because that will only bring out the best in me. I feel my title was taken from me and being held hostage and I want it back. I will go through anything to get it back. The moment he’s cleared to fight I want the match and I will get my title back. I’m going in June 23 for a dominant victory and a ferocious attitude and a mindset to destroy, because I know I can’t leave it to the judges anymore.”

Boxing Betting Tips

Without question the aforementioned loss by Anthony Joshua to a fill-in was quite sobering. Bu this is still Charlo’s fight to lose.
