Gennady Golovkin vs. Steve Rolls Betting

Following his epic majority decision loss to Saul Alvarez for the world unification world middleweight title last September 15 Gennady Golovkin did a lot of soul searching. First, he made the business decision to sign on with DAZN in a mega multimillion-dollar deal that will set him and his family up for life. Second, in a more painful decision, he cut ties with his long-time trainer Abel Sanchez. It was a bitter end for Sanchez, who had developed Golovkin into a dominant champion. As for Golovkin he is looking forward to changing his style and adapting to new ways after the first loss of his career.

DAZN will present underdog Steve Rolls (19-0, 10 knockouts) taking on massive favorite Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 knockouts) in a 12 round super middleweight bout that will take place at Madison Square Garden, New York, on June 8, 2019.

Fight Preview

Abel Sanchez was insulted at Gennady Golovkin’s low ball offer after the former unified middleweight champion cashed in the winning ticket with DAZN. Perhaps Golovkin knew that Sanchez would be insulted at the pay cut and bolt. Regardless that is exactly what the trainer did. Sanchez left a bitter and very unhappy man that felt totally betrayed. He said that DAZN has changed Golovkin and made him selfish and greedy. He added that Golovkin has lost his morals.

As for Golovkin he said that Sanchez was a great trainer that did much for his career. He even added that Sanchez was a Hall of Fame level trainer. And then he moved on to select Johnathon Banks as his new trainer.

In changing trainers, Golovkin realized that things had grown stale for him under Sanchez, and that a change was needed. His last two fights were not the dominant finishes of his past and he felt that he was falling behind. Banks wants Golovkin to be quicker and more assertive. But the questions remain about whether or not old dog Golovkin can really learn new tricks. Indeed, it is a new chapter for the 37-year-old former champ.

“You can call it a restart, a new approach, a new atmosphere is now in the team, a new view for everything,” remarked Golovkin.

Banks has an impressive background that includes his own schooling under the legendary Detroit coach Emmanuel Steward of Kronk Gym.

Many believe that Golovkin should have been the winner against Alvarez although it was a razor thin margin between the two in their rematch last September. Keep in mind that Golovkin and Canelo fought to a draw in September of 2017 that countless observers thought Golovkin actually won. But Canelo has become the marquee man and face of boxing. Which makes winning a decision against him all the more difficult.

Banks has taken up the challenge with both realism and enthusiasm.

“What goes through a fighter’s mind is unimaginable for a lot of people,” said Banks. “It’s hard to explain. A fighter has to make decisions that they’re going to have to live with for the rest of their life.”

Golovkin has been criticized for not taking the attack and throwing punches as frequently as he should. His habit of waiting did not serve him well against Alvarez. The fact that Golovkin is more passive also serves to help keep his opponents rested and not falling into the fatigue trap.

“We were quite successful with our career,” said Golovkin. “But there are other options.”
