Errol Spence Jr. is considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the game. The Ring declared him the sixth best boxer in any class last month, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone who quibbles with that assessment considering his excellence in the ring.

After winning three straight national championships as an amateur welterweight, Spence made a splash at the 2012 Olympics. Shortly afterwards, he made his professional debut and he quickly rose up the ranks as a welterweight.

Spence pummeled his first 21 opponents into submission. Over a four-year stretch, he beat all 21 boxers placed in front of him, and he beat all but three of those opponents by knockout. That earned him a title shot against Kell Brook in May 2017, and he put Brook on the canvas in the 10th round before knocking him out in the 11th round. Spence claimed the IBF welterweight title as a result, and he has made three successful title defenses.

In January 2018, Spence battered Lamont Peterson until his corner threw in the towel in the seventh round, and in June 2018, Spence knocked out Carlos Ocampo in the first round. His last fight was back in March, when he took on Mikey Garcia. Garcia proved to be a worthy opponent, lasting all 12 rounds, but Spence won all 12 rounds handily, outpunching his opponent by a margin of 5-1.

Shawn Porter has been involved in a welterweight title fight for all four major federations this decade. He won his first 19 fights before earning his first shot at a strap, and he beat Alfonso Gomez by unanimous decision in July 2012 with the vacant WBO title on the line. He boxed to a draw against Julio Diaz in his first title defense, but then he won the vacant IBF title in the rematch, beating Diaz by unanimous decision in 10 rounds.

Porter defended his belt against Devon Alexander and Paulie Malignaggi before losing by majority decision to Kell Brook in August 2014. He won his next two fights to contend for another title, but he lost to Keith Thurman with the WBA belt on the line in June 2016.

We saw Porter defeat Andre Berto and Adrian Granados in his next two fights for one more title shot, and he claimed this one by beating Danny Garcia by unanimous decision for the WBC welterweight title. Porter retained that title in March with a split decision win over Yordenis Ugas.

Fight Preview

Although Porter is a sizable underdog according to the boxing betting line, he is very confident ahead of this fight. He employed third person when discussing his chances against Spence, and he said: ”I think Errol’s confidence is natural like mine. But I think that he’s fed his confidence to the point where some arrogance has come out. I think he’s going to show that in the fight early on. He’s going to have to adjust. Once he recognizes that, I expect the arrogance to go out the window and that he’ll have to figure it out. I’ve never seen Errol go through any adversity in the ring. I don’t think anyone has been able to challenge him the way I can challenge him. I’m really looking forward to it.

When discussing the fight from his perspective, Spence threw some shade at Porter by saying: “I guarantee you, I will become the undisputed welterweight champion of the world, but I have to get through Shawn Porter first and become unified. This is going to be a tough fight. Shawn is a dog and he has amazing heart. I am not going to say he has all the skills in the world, but he does have talent. He’s a guy that’s going to come to fight and give it his all. But I believe I do have the skills and talent and the dog and the heart to not only make this an easy fight but I can stop him and that’s what I am looking to do.”

Boxing Betting Tips

While analysts like Andre Ward are giving Porter a fair chance at pulling off the upset, I believe the oddsmakers are right to have Spence lined as a heavy favorite. Spence in his prime, and he will beat Porter convincingly.
