2014 Winter Olympics odds: Few moments and events on the planet bring together the entire world like the Winter Olympics do, and this year's competitions on the Olympics lines in Sochi will be no exception. Think of snowboarding a little bit like surfing and a little bit like skiing. Combine the surf and the snow, and what you've got is snowboarding, which became an Olympic event for the first time back in 1998.
As is the case for a lot of these winter sports which seem like they belong more in the X-Games than in the Olympics, there are new events being added all the time. This year, the Olympics betting lines will be competed in the events of the parallel slalom and the slopestyle, which have never been held before. Other events include the half-pipe, the snowboard cross, and the parallel giant slalom, and there are both men's and women's divisions in all five sports, creating a total of 10 medals to be awarded in this event.
The fact of the matter is that the Olympics have to start early for snowboarders due to how busy the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park is going to be over the course of these Olympic Games. The competition on the Olympics gambling lines actually starts for snowboarders first, as they will take to the slopes at 10:00 AM with slopestyle qualification the day before the opening ceremonies. There are a few other events which are also featuring qualifying runs before the Olympics actually formally get started, but none are kicking off earlier than snowboarding.
We'll briefly go over the differences in all of the events as well. The parallel slalom and parallel giant slalom are both races which go through a number of gates, just as we see in speed skiing. The gates require a number of tight turns, and the difference between these two races are the distances which they cover.
Slopestyle is a rather odd sport, knowing that competitors are asked to perform tricks across all sorts of different terrains with designed boxes and rails to create those tricks on. This is an adjudicated event with subjective scores instead of objective times, and that definitely throws a kink into the works for those betting the Olympics wagering lines.
Half-pipe is a ditch dug into a mountain, and competitors go back and forth on the half-pipe performing tricks, similar to what you would see with both snowboards in the Winter X-Games and skateboards in the Summer X-Games.
Snowboard cross is another race down a slope in which four at a time compete going through gates and through hilly terrains.
Not surprisingly, considering the fact that Americans invented snowboarding, they dominated at the podium in Vancouver in 2010. Shaun White, the most notable of all of the snowboarders in the world, took the gold in the half-pipe. He was one of the two gold medals which the Americans claimed in the six events.
Interestingly enough, the American women didn't fare quite as well. They only had two medals in the three events, and the split on the women's side for snowboarding was incredibly. Of the nine medals, eight different countries were represented in Vancouver.
