2014 Winter Olympics odds: The 2014 Winter Olympics are just about here! Before some of the best athletes on the planet get together to do battles for their country, we here at BookMaker Sportsbook are going to be looking at one of the best events to bet on the Olympics odds in Sochi, Ski Jumping.
Just as is the case for figure skating and some of the other events in the Winter Games, ski jumping is a tough one to handicap on the Olympics betting odds thanks to the fact that judges are accountable for half of the scoring for this event.
The concept of ski jumping is relatively simple. Skiers go up a hill before going down a take-off ramp, and they will try to jump as far as possible. The longer which they can travel in the air, not only the more distance they will cover, but the more time they have to pull off tricks. Judges award points for style, and though the scoring between distance and style isn't necessarily a 50/50 split, it has a tendency of being a relatively close proportion.
There are two types of hills which the jumpers take off from, and they are different events in which you can bet on the Olympics gambling odds. Normal hills are generally around 100 meters high, and distances of over 100 meters is expected to be reached. Gold medalists will travel at least 110 to 115 meters, if not longer. The large hill is slightly higher at 130 meters high, and distances of at least 150 meters can be reached on the larger hills.
These are the same hills which are used for the Nordic combined races, and of course, the larger hill competitions are the ones which garner the more interest from the general public because the jumps are higher, farther, and more exciting to take in.
Women don't have nearly as many medal chances here at ski jumping as the men do, as the sport just isn't all that popular for females at this point. The ladies only have one medal event, the normal hill competition, in which there is only a qualifying round and a medal round. The men go through qualifying on the normal hill and on the large hill before going through a second qualifying round and finally the medal rounds. The men compete on the normal hill on Saturday, February 8th and Sunday, February 9th. The women have their one competition on Tuesday, February 11th, while the men head to the large hill on Friday, February 14th and 15th.
This is the first time in the Olympics in which women will compete in ski jumping.
The final competition on the Olympics wagering odds is the team challenge, which takes place on the large hill. A team of four men will compete on the large hill looking for the highest total score possible.
Last year, the Austrians dominated on the large hill as a team, winning by 70.1 points over the Germans and the Norwegians.
Not shockingly, with very little difference between the normal hill and the large hill competitions, the exact same three men finished first, second, and third in the competitions. Switzerland's Simon Anmann took the gold in both events, while Poland's Adam Malysz took the silver in both. Gregor Schlierenzauer was the only man to sweep medals in ski jumping, as he took bronze in the two individual events and was the anchor in the large hill team event.
