2014 Olympics Skeleton Bobsleigh Betting Odds2014 Winter Olympics odds: Few moments and events on the planet bring together the entire world like the Winter Olympics do, and this year's competitions on the Olympics lines in Sochi will be no exception. Join us at BookMaker Sportsbook, as we break down some of the most notable sporting events of the 2014 Olympiad, including Skeleton.

Skeleton is a rather odd racing competition which will be competed on the Olympics betting lines at the Sliding Center Sanki just outside of Sochi in the Mountain Cluster at Krasnaya Polyana. This is one of the three events which will be held at this venue, joining the very similar sports of luge and bobsleigh.

What makes skeleton different from the other two races is that this is the only one of the three in which the competitors are lying flat on their stomachs on the board. Bobsleigh is a team competition where the racers are all sitting down, while the luge, the fastest of the three "sliding" races, is competed lying flat on one's back. Theoretically, that makes skeleton one of the most dangerous sports in the Winter Olympics, knowing that the athletes are all racing as fast as they can down a slippery, winding track, head first, but thanks to the fact that the speeds are generally slower in the skeleton than in the luge, there actually aren't as many brutal injuries.

The skeleton competition will take place over a total of just three days, and there are only two events in this discipline. There are men's and women's runs, and simply put, it is a matter of the best time in the individual heats, wins. The women will run their first two heats on Thursday, February 13th, and their final two heats on Friday, February 14th, while the men will run their first two heats on the 14th and finish up with their third and fourth heats on Saturday, February 15th, where winners will be crowned and medals will be handed out on the Olympics gambling lines.

Skeleton is a rather new sport in the Winter Olympics, as there have only been a total of eight medals handed out in this sport all-time. However, after the first medals were handed out in skeleton in 1948, the sport disappeared until the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. This is the fourth consecutive Olympic Games and the fifth all-time in which skeleton has been a sanctioned sport for the IOC.

The Americans, who did so well when this sport was re-introduced in 2002, were shut out of any of the medals in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Jon Montgomery, one of the most well-known skeleton athletes in the world, took the gold medals for Canada, while Amy Williams won the gold for Great Britain in the women's event. Keep a close eye on the Germans though, as Kerstin Snymkowiak and Anja Huber placed second and third only short fractions of seconds behind Williams to take the silver and the bronze.

Germany was the only nation on the Olympics wagering lines which took multiple medals in skeleton in the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. Though there aren't many countries outside of the main powers that compete in skeleton, there are individuals from countries such as Mexico and the Virgin Islands who are going to be trying their hand this year as sliders for the skeleton.
