2014 Winter Olympics odds: Olympics betting action is about set to get started at BookMaker Sportsbook. Today, we'll look at one of the most important sports of the Olympic Games, Short Track Speed Skating.
Surely, you know the name Apolo Ohno at this point, as he is one of the most notable American Olympians regardless of whether we are talking about the Winter Games or the Summer Games. There aren't many who will see more individuals bets for Olympics betting picks in any event this year in Sochi outside of Ohno, who is clearly going to be amongst the favorites in every one of the short track speed skating races he enters.
The concept of short track speed skating is simple. Skaters will all line up at the Adler Arena Skating Center in the Coastal Cluster in Sochi in front of around 8,000 spectators and race around a track. The oval track has a circumference of just over 110 meters, and races consist of 500 meters, 1,000 meters, and 1,500 meters for both men and women. There are also two team races, a 5,000 meter relay for the men and a 3,000 meter relay for the ladies.
The schedule for short track speed skating is grueling for sure for both the men and the women, as there are qualifying runs for each of the events as well as medal challenges. There are a total of 60 men and 60 women who will compete on the Olympics betting lines in short track speed skating, and many of the skaters will take place in all four of the events in their gender category. The United States, for example, is using the same combination of five men and four women for its individual races, and the men are using those same five for the relay race. The American women didn't qualify for the relay.
Typically, this is a sport which is dominated by the Americans, the Canadians, and various Asian nations. In fact, China, South Korea, Canada, and the United States took all but one of the medals throughout all of the men's and the women's events, as the outlier was Arianna Fontana, who only took the bronze medal for Italy in the women's 500 meters.
The Chinese women, in particular, could make for a dominating play on the Olympics betting odds. Wang Meng took first in Vancouver in the 2010 Olympics in both the 500 meters and the 1,000 meters, while Zhou Yang was the winner of the 1,500 meters. Those two helped set the world record for the 3,000-meter relay in 4:06.610, solid three seconds ahead of the Canadian team and almost eight seconds ahead of the Americans.
On the men's side, keep an eye out for Lee Jung-Su, who won both the 1,000 meters and 1,500 meters races in Vancouver, and he and his four teammates finished second in the 5,000-meter relay. Apolo Ohno actually had a relatively suspect Olympic Games in Canada in 2010, as he only finished third in the 1,000 meters, second in the 1,500 meters, and had a relatively slow run in his leg of the 5,000-meter relay for the bronze medalist Americans. To show just how close that team race was though, the time separating the Canadians, who won that race, and the Americans, who finished third, was just 0.274 seconds.
