2014 Winter Olympics odds: Few moments and events on the planet bring together the entire world like the Winter Olympics do, and this year's competitions on the Olympics lines in Sochi will be no exception. An event much like the bobsleigh, the luge consists of either one or two men or women on a small sled in which they are essentially sitting up. To steer the sled, it takes tremendous balance and muscle in your arms and legs. Luge racers are in incredibly tight quarters with the track around them, and they are certainly at the most risk since they are just sitting on an open sled. Racers have been known to get up to at least 90 miles per hour in the luge, and there isn't all that much separating all of the competitors, knowing that there isn't much technology involved. All of the aerodynamics and speeds are created by the skills of the riders.
That said, this is one of the toughest events on the Olympics betting lines to handicap due to the close nature of the events. The luge is timed out to the thousandth of a second, and there are times where that thousandths column has been needed to determine winners of luge races. There is no other event in the Winter Olympics which is timed beyond the hundredths place in seconds, and there actually isn't another event in the Summer Olympics timed that precisely either.
All of the luging will take place at the Sliding Center Sanki in the Mountain Cluster in Sochi. The event is held over six days, the first six days of the Olympics. The men will take center stage first, as they will go through their qualifying run followed by their medal run on consecutive days. The next two days belong to the ladies. Doubles are run on Wednesday, February 12th, while on Thursday, the team relay competition is held. This is the first time that nations will compete against each other in relay competition.
This is historically an event which is wide open on the Olympics gambling lines, and it isn't all that often that we see some of the big name countries coming up with medals in the luge. For example, in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Latvia and Austria both picked up very rare and precious medals to bring back to their homelands.
The Germans though, are the ones who dominate in the luge. Last year alone, the Germans captured the gold medal in the men's singles and women's singles competition. They also had the silver medalist in the men's singles and the bronze medalist in the women's singles, while they also took third in the doubles race.
This year, there are 12 nations which will take part in the festivities on the Olympics wagering lines in the team relay competition. Forty men will be represented, while 30 women will be taking place in the luge. There are 20 sets of doubles as well. No country is allowed to have more than three men or three women represented in this competition, and it is extremely rare to see Olympians pick up more than one medal in the luge. This year though, with the team relay option, there are men which will surely be able to pull off the double.
