2014 Shanghai Rolex Masters Results

Roger Federer beat Frenchman Gilles Simon to win his first Shanghai Masters crown Sunday and his fourth title of the season.

After a stellar performance to beat Djokovic in Saturday’s semi-finals, Federer vowed he would not suffer a letdown against Simon, but struggled early on. The Swiss contributed three unforced errors as Simon broke his serve in the first game of the final, but rallied from 3-5 down to draw level in the opener. Federer was denied two set points as Simon trailed 5-6, 15/40, as the Frenchman dug deep to force a tie-break.

Federer then relinquished a 5-3 lead in the tie-break as Simon fought back to earn a set point at 6-5. Federer quickly dispelled the danger with two unreturned serves, and clinched his third set point chance with a backhand pass up the line.  Roger Federer wins first Shanghai Masters title with victory over Gilles Simon. The 33-year-old Swiss will now move above Rafael Nadal in world rankings.

Federer says he won't change schedule for chance to regain world No.1 spot, but the 17-time grand slam champion says he's not slowing down yet.

Djokovic Does It Again in Shanghai

When it comes to the Shanghai Rolex Masters it's been all about Novak Djokovic the past two years.

Djokovic put on another remarkable performance this year to win his second consecutive Shanghai Rolex Masters title in a match that was highly memorable and one that saw the sold out stadium erupt with a standing ovation at the end.

In Sunday's final, Djokovic battled for two hours, 32 minutes to edge past Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

Obviously, China is a comfort zone for Djokovic. His victory was his 20th match win in a row in the country and provided his seventh career title in China. The past two years, Djokovic won in Beijing twice (four in total) and now the Shanghai Rolex Masters twice. He also won Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai in 2008.

Dodig/Melo win Shanghai Doubles Title

Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo improved their chances of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the first time by capturing the Shanghai Rolex Masters title on Sunday.

The fifth seeds defeated eighth-seeded Spaniards and fellow London contenders David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 10-2, in a thrilling final, for their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown that was also their first team title.

The Croatian-Brazilian team earned $226,000 and 1,000 Emirates ATP Ranking points for their victory in one hour and 44 minutes, and moved up to third position in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings.

Men's Singles - Djokovic Beats Murray

Novak Djokovic saved five match points before recovering to beat Andy Murray in the Shanghai Masters tennis final yesterday for his second straight tournament win. Victoria Azarenka also has back-to-back titles.

Serbia's Djokovic, ranked No. 2 on the ATP World Tour, and Azarenka of Belarus, the leading women's player, both won at the China Open the previous week.

Djokovic, 25, beat the third-ranked Murray 5-7, 7-6 (13- 11), 6-3 in a 3 hour, 21-minute match at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center. It extended his winning streak to 10 matches since losing to the Briton in last month's U.S. Open final and boosted his chances of taking the No. 1 spot from Switzerland's Roger Federer.
