2014 Rogers Cup Results

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins against Roger Federer

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga stamped an exclamation mark on his improbable run at the 2014 Rogers Cup in Toronto by taking down Roger Federer in straight sets Sunday, 7-5, 7-6 (3).

As a No. 13 seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had a punishing draw at the Rogers Cup. He didn't have big expectations entering the tournament but proceeded to take down some of the biggest names in tennis en route to the final.

Once he got there, arguably the greatest player in the sport's history became his latest victim.

It was his fourth straight victory over a top-10 opponent. He upset top-seeded Novak Djokovic in the third round, eighth-seeded Andy Murray in the quarter-final and seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinal.

Tsonga earned $598,900 US for winning the $3.78-million tournament while Federer received $293,650 as the finalist. It was Tsonga's second career Masters 1000 Series win and his first victory at this event.

Radwanska ends Venus' dream

Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland triumphed in two sets (6-4, 6-2) over Venus Williams of the US in 1:22.

The first win of the season for Radwanska provided a timely jolt of confidence going into Flushing Meadows and the year’s final Grand Slam, with 11 of her 14 career WTA Tour titles having come on hard courts.

Radwanska, who, until today, had reached two Rogers Cup semifinals, ended Venus’ exceptional run. At 34 years old, the American was out to become the oldest player ever to win the title.

Rafael Nadal dominates Milos Raonic in final

Milos Raonic called it a learning experience. It certainly wasn't the victory party the Uniprix Stadium crowd was hoping for as Rafael Nadal took only one hour eight minutes to down Canada's top tennis player 6-2, 6-2 in the US$3.49 million Rogers Cup final on Sunday.

But it had taken 55 years for a Canadian just to get to the final of the country's biggest tournament, so Raonic had much to celebrate despite the defeat.

For one, by reaching the final he will be ranked 10th in the world when the next rankings appear Monday morning, making him the first Canadian to crack the top-10. He will be the youngest player in the top 10 as well.

Serena Williams defeats Sorana Cirstea to win 2013 Rogers Cup

Top ranked Serena Williams finished the 2013 Rogers Cup with exactly the same result as her previous four matches leading up to Sunday's final - a win in straight sets.

The 31-year-old captured her third title at this event, defeating upstart Romanian, Sorana Cirstea (6-2, 6-0). Cirstea ranks 27th in the world and was not seeded in the main draw.

In a game of power, the two traded hard forehand and backhand shots from the baseline and unleashed high speed serves throughout the 65 minute match. In the end, it was the veteran, who proved to be just too much.

Williams broke Cirstea's serve three times in the first set including twice in the first three games to go up 3-0.

Cirstea, who showed an ability this week to come from behind, pulled within one game of tying the set by breaking Williams and then holding serve to pull within one at 3-2.

As the set wore on, she lost any momentum she had going forward by hitting the net on several key points. Williams closed out the set with a hard serve that sailed high and out of play on Cirstea's return.

2012 Togers Cup Results

Li Na Proves She Still Owns Lucie Safarova

To put it bluntly, Lucie Safarova gave this match away. She was primed to finally exorcise her demons against Li Na, but she collapsed and gave up a third-set lead in a 6-3, 3-6, 5-7 defeat.

This marks the sixth time in a row that Li has disposed of Safarova. This one will probably sting more than any of the previous five losses.

Safarova was up 5-1 in the third set, and she simply could not finish Li. She committed a string of unforced errors, failed to react to Li's angled serves and completely imploded. It was actually tough to watch, as she was so close to pulling out a much-needed victory.

At this point, Safarova's confidence has to be in the dumps. Li is definitely in her head. There's no other way to look at their matchup at this point.

In the third set, she couldn't find the accuracy with her service game, and the errors she made were inexplicable.

Novak Djokovic dominates Richard Gasquet for second-straight title

They refuse to share the spoils. There's this small, and apparently greedy, group of brilliant athletes dominating the top of the men's tennis game these days, a quartet of players who won't to let anyone else win a tournament of significance or with a big cash prize attached.

Even when they don't expect to win and seem to have the odds stacked against them, they win anyway.

That dominance continued Sunday evening at the Rexall Centre when Novak Djokovic, one of the four, steamrolled Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2 in an hour to capture the 2012 Rogers Cup.

Since late 2010, the quartet of Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have won all the Grand Slam events and all the Masters series tourneys, leaving scraps for the rest of the ATP Tour.

The numbers are stunning. That foursome has now won 15 consecutive Masters tourneys and 11 straight majors.
