RAONIC DOWNS BERDYCH TO CLAIM BANGKOK CROWN

Canada's Milos Raonic stepped up his bid to qualify for November's Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by toppling top seed Tomas Berdych to claim the Thailand Open title in Bangkok on Sunday.

The third-seeded Raonic defeated Berdych 7-6(4), 6-3, prevailing in one hour and 17 minutes. The right-hander fired 18 aces to his opponent's four, saved the only break point he faced and won 95 per cent of first serve points.

He is now just 180 points behind tenth-placed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Emirates ATP Race to London. Both Raonic and Tsonga are competing in Tokyo next week.

Raonic improved his FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Berdych to 2-0 and captured his second title of the season following a third straight win in San Jose (d. Haas). He improved his record in ATP World Tour finals to 5-4 and lifted his career record against Top 10 opponents to 12-20.

MURRAY/PEERS CAPTURE BANGKOK DOUBLES TITLE

Third seeds Jamie Murray and John Peers have captured their third title as a team, rallying past fourth seeds Tomasz Bednarek and Johan Brunstrom 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 to win the Thailand Open in Bangkok on Sunday.

The British-Australian team fired five aces and won 83 per cent of first serve points in their first meeting against the Polish/Swedish team, which lasted one hour and 11 minutes. It was the first tournament for Bednarek and Brunstrom.

Murray and Peers, who teamed up at the beginning of this season, have won three of their 15 tournaments this season. Their maiden title was in Houston (d. Bryan/Bryan) in April, and their second was in Gstaad (d. Andujar/Garcia-Lopez) in July.

The 27-year-old Murray improved his win-loss record in ATP World Tour finals to 10-5, while the 25-year-old Peers lifted his to 3-0.

Men's Singles - Gasquet wins 7th title in his Bangkok debut

In the all-French singles final on Sunday, second seed Richard Gasquet outplayed fellow Frenchman and fourth seed Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-1 to win his seventh career title in his Bangkok debut.

The world #14 converted five of his eight break point opportunities in the match and won 75 percent of points on his serve and 58 percent on return.

With the defeat, Simon remains winless against Gasquet (0-6).

The title was Gasquet's first of this year. He was runner-up in Estoril in May and ATP Masters 1000 Toronto in August.

Udomchoke, Lu upset fourth seeds to win historic doubles title

Wildcards Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan and Danai Udomchoke of Thailand upset fourth seeds Eric Butorac of the USA and Paul Hanley of Australia 6-3, 6-4 to win their first ATP World Tour doubles title together at the Thailand Open.

The Asian duo earned the crucial break in the eight game of the opening set, as Lu struck a forehand return winner down the line at 40-40. Serving for the set at 5-3, Lu hit a forehand down the line, forcing Hanley into error to take the lead.

In the second set, Udomchoke returned a winner on Hanley's serve to give the wildcards two break points in the third game. The fourth seeds tried to challenge on the serve, claiming that they were unprepared for the return because they thought the serve was out. However the chair umpire didn't award a challenge, citing the American-Australian pair did not both stop play and call for a challenge. Lu and Udomchoke converted their second opportunity and held the next service game to lead 3-1.

The set went on with no further breaks of serve. The match concluded with Lu hitting a forehand winner down the line to earn a match point and striking an unreturned serve to close it out on the first opportunity.

It was an historic win indeed, especially for Udomchoke as it was his first-ever ATP World Tour title and nothing can be more sweet than winning one on home soil. It was also a fitting celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Thailand Open.
