Nadal falls to Djokovic in China Open final

With a 65-3 record and 10 titles in 12 finals appearances, Nadal will cap off his amazing year with an ascent to the No. 1 ATP ranking following a trip to the China Open finals. Despite the achievement, current No.1 Novak Djokovic had one last parting shot before leaving the perch he has held for 101 weeks, defeating Nadal 6-3, 6-4 to win his fourth China Open title.

Nadal praised Djokovic for the victory, paying respect to the excellent play of his opponent.

Djokovic was nearly unbeatable while serving on Sunday afternoon, notching a staggering 91 percent first serve win percentage. The 26-year-old didn't drop a serve all match, leaving Nadal reliant on his serve, which lacked consistency throughout the contest.

Serena Williams beats Jelena Jankovic to win China Open

Williams appeared in pain after serving an ace in the third game of set two as Jankovic broke for the only time but the Serb was the one who had to take a medical time out for a hip problem.

The eighth-seed then lost the next five games as 32-year-old American Williams captured her 10th title of the season.

Jankovic herself acknowledged she had been well beaten by the 17-time major singles winner, saying: "Serena was just too good and big congratulations to her."

Men's Singles

Top-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 6-2 on Sunday to win his third China Open tennis title in Beijing then celebrated by dancing with the ball boys and girls on court.

World number two Djokovic dug deep in the first set after an early trade of breaks to win a close tie-breaker and then broke the third-seeded Tsonga twice in the second set.

After receiving his trophy, Djokovic delighted the crowd by joining the ball girls and boys in doing the "horse dance" made popular by Billboard chart-topping South Korean rapper Psy in his "Gangnam Style" hit.

Sunday's victory gave Djokovic, who also won the China Open in 2009 and 2010, his fourth title of the year.

Women's Singles

Victoria Azarenka thrashed second seed Maria Sharapova of Russia in straight sets yesterday to win the $4.8m China Open.

The Belarusian dispatched Sharapova, ranked No2 in the world, 6-3 6-1 in the final of the Beijing tournament — the last Premier Mandatory event of the women's calendar.

Azarenka sped to a 4-0 lead in the first set against the French Open champion, breaking her opponent's serve twice and holding her own on both occasions.

Sharapova won her first game in the fifth, before Australian Open champion Azarenka continued her 100% service game in the sixth.
